Comic Book Review: CREEPY #16

Published May 3, 2014 by biggayhorrorfan

creepy
CREEPY is back! Well, actually, thanks to Dark Horse Comics, it’s been back for almost a year and a half – but issue #16 is something special. This anthology style fright fest, a revamp of the classic Warren Comics of old, features characters that terror outcasts can truly relate to. Ultimately, this makes this issue as a whole, a tribute to what draws sensitive souls and rambunctious adventurers, alike, to the horror genre.

Reflecting ingredients from such Asian fright flicks as The Ring and One Missed Call, Ted Naifeh’s Do Not Click illustrates what happens when a kind and concerned educator is forced to defend herself against an unreasonable opponent.

As someone who hasn’t been on a date since the break-up of My Chemical Romance (or was it The Beatles??), Like Clockwork (scripted by the perfectly macabre Rachel Deering with slyly sadistic artwork by Vanesa Del Rey) hit a cord with me. Of course, timid Evan’s bloody solution is something that I will, personally, try to avoid – at least for the very near future!

The third story concerns a shy orphan boy whose actions, upon the loss of a beloved pet, changes the fate of an entire town in a sweetly sinister adaptation of HP Lovecraft’s The Cats of Ulthar.

Mike Royer’s sexy 60s style artwork highlights the final feature, Bill Warren’s I Hate You! I Hate You! Here, a revengeful young man named Dale soon discovers that time travel is nothing to mess with. Warren’s sense of cruel despair is almost palatable here.

As a cool bonus feature, the final pages also include a sassy interview with the talented Deering who has recently complied a gorgeously mammoth collection of new fright pieces entitled In The Dark.

The Comic Adventures of George Romero!

Published October 9, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

Empire_of_the_Dead
New York City just got a bit nastier – and horror fans are all the better for it!

Zombie gourmand George Romero has just announced an association with Marvel Comics to produce the latest chapter in his undead legacy, Empire of the Dead. Proclaiming that he could never get the money he needed to film this chomping epic in the Big Apple, Romero turned to superhero guru Stan Lee and crew. Now, we have a January 2014 announced release for this (sure to be) eye popping page turner.

All reports state that Romero will continue to explore the increased intelligence and humanity of his life lacking creatures – a concept he began with Day of the Dead‘s Bub.

And as for us – well, we would be stupid not to follow wherever this true master of horror may lead!

Corinne Halbert and Hate Baby!

Published July 30, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

Hate_Baby_3_cover_
Aggressively original, pushing the creative envelope to its limit, eye shockingly fun…No, I am not describing the trio of zombie prostitutes who raised me! Those joyous descriptors pertain to the art of Corinne Halbert.

Therefore, if you haven’t heard of this sexy beast (with a stabbingly unique vision) then Big Gay Horror Fan is putting you on notice! The evocative Halbert recently released her third book in her horror influenced Hate Baby series and it is filled to the brim with sexual mayhem, total un-correct correctness and taboo stretching antics.

Talking Hack/Slash’s End with Tim Seeley!

Published April 12, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

Big Gay Horror Fan turned 25. Once. A long time ago.

Awesome horror comic Hack/Slash just hit 25 as well, spelling the end (at least for the time being) of Cassie Hack and crew. Yes, blood will be spilled, lives will be forfeited and fervent fans will mourn.

Thankfully, below, Hack/Slash creator Tim Seeley talks about his decision to end the comic and how we can stay clued into his further adventures.

Hack/Slash Dies at 25!

Published February 5, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

Work shifts, those extra calories, shocking moments of self doubt – these are all things that Big Gay Horror Fan would be happy to have end. But beloved terror comic Hack/Slash – never!

Unfortunately, even the best things have their completion dates and awesome creative force Tim Seeley is putting a halt to the blood spilling adventures of Cassie and Co with issue 25.

An independent comic force, Hack/Slash has gotten deserved love from horror fiends and smartly discerning geeks alike. Sexy, smart and filled with voluminous heart, Hack/Slash’s long running story of a vibrant avenger who had a talent for disposing of undead slashers and murderous monsters was full of underdogs and misfits. Whether through the defiant actions of emotionally vulnerable Cassie, the concerned comedy of hulking Vlad or the hilarious self pitying reflections of loyal Pooch, this was a world that all quirky souls could find a place in.

Of course, Seeley who will be concentrating on other projects such as noir-terror tale Revival, has asserted that Hack/Slash could return in the future. A thought that gives all of us mini-skirt sporting avengers a trembling sigh of relief!

You can keep up with all of Seeley’s future offerings at http://timseeleyart.blogspot.com/ and https://twitter.com/HackinTimSeeley.
