Flashback Weekend Spotlight: Betsy Russell, “Out of Control”

Published August 8, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

outofcontrol
Big Gay Horror Fan well remembers the thrills and chills of getting trapped on that Ferris Wheel, overlooking the city of Chicago, with his follow Novices of Bloodlust and Pink Leather. I look back, fondly, on those many games of corseted Truth or Dare and hours of Slurpee dunking that we partook in while waiting for our rescue.

Similarly, in the 1984 lensed/1985 released Out of Control, horror seductress Betsy Russell (the Saw series, Cheerleader Camp, Camp Fear) and her friends (played by such pop culture and genre regulars as Sherilyn Fenn, Claudia Udy, Martin Hewitt and Jim Youngs) deal with their boredom, while marooned on a deserted island, by slamming back illegal bottles of vodka and playing strip spin the bottle! Soon, though, a bunch of unshaven bandits descend upon them, effectively ending our teens’ free-for-all fun and sending them down the path of Straw Dogs style vengeance making.

oocvhsHighlighted by goofy MTV style (New Wave pulsing) video shenanigans and Scooby Doo inspired chase scenes, this silly romp mixes things up by incorporating some pretty intense rape imagery (with homosexual overtones – as the film’s male comic relief character is tied up and threatened with sexual savagery, as well). Russell’s character, meanwhile, is also given a bit more depth than a regular terror film heroine.

Her Chrissie Barret has long been involved with the most popular (and richest) kid at the school. Yet, Barret is not content, as she flirts with other guys and, slowly, begins the process of finding herself. Even as the kids make their escape at the film’s ending, you can tell that Barret is reaching far beyond her previous realms and Russell’s often sad, powerfully confused portrayal adds layers to this (crazily fun) action-teen adventure-revenge film mish-mash.

If you are in the Midwest on August 9th, 10th and 11th (2013), be sure to plan a visit with the always glorious Russell at Chicago’s own terror convention, Flashback Weekend! http://www.flashbackweekend.com

The Conjuring

Published June 28, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

The-Conjuring
Sure, Big Gay Horror Fan’s apartment is haunted! Well, if noisy neighbors and a variety of roaches (the size of last summer’s non-blockbuster Battleship, mind you) count. Still, the random creak and half awake realization that someone could be lurking in the hallway are a part of everyone’s existence – lending credence to such recent haunted house epics as the Paranormal Activity series, Insidious and Sinister.

Thus, with baited breath we await the July 19th unveiling of the latest spooky dwelling flick, The Conjuring , featuring the luminous Vera Farmiga (Bates Hotel, Orphan), Broadway stalwart Patrick Wilson (Insidious, Hard Candy) and the always interesting Lili Taylor (The Haunting, Hemlock Grove, The Addiction).

Meanwhile, for queer horror piglets everywhere, the news that One Life to Live‘s hunky John Brotherton (the first victim in Season 6 of Dexter, as well) is a member of The Conjuring cast offers just another reason to get to the theaters in mid-July!

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Lady Lamb The Beekeeper, “The Nothing, Part II”

Published May 19, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

When he was a child, Big Gay Horror Fan was abducted from the parochial terrors of Mother Superior’s Leather Hooded Orphanage by some well meaning strangers. Oh, how he misses those days of self-flagellation at the hands of double horned Sister Sophia!

Amazing NY musician Lady Lamb The Beekeeper (AKA Aly Spaltro) takes abduction scenarios to pie-strewn heights with the video for her vibrant song “The Nothing, Part II”, though. Spooky, atmospheric and noir-dark, this chilling treatise brings some Communion style horror to the complexities of modern life.

R.I.P. (Horror Soundtrack Goddess) Christina Amphlett

Published April 24, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

FILE: Former Divinyls Singer Chrissy Amphlett Dies Aged 53
World wise sexuality and courageous resolve – No, I am not talking about the hunchbacked warrior goddesses that raised Big Gay Horror Fan, but New Wave rocker, author and actress Christina Amphlett who lost her fierce battle with breast cancer and multiple sclerosis on Sunday, April 21st (2013) at the age of 53.

Chrissie-20Amphlett-20-202-300x0As the lead singer of Divinyls, Amphlett brought strength and sexuality to the fore in the mid-to-late 80’s with hits such as “I Touch Myself” and (the even more tantalizing) “Pleasure and Pain”. More than anything, perhaps, it was her image as a woman who would take no guff (one Divinyls’ LP was entitled “Temperamental”) that endeared her to the more pin sharp music lovers of the MTV age.

Teens who grew into their terror tights during the reign of Freddy and Jason, also, fondly remember Amphlett as one of the horror soundtrack queens. Divinyls’ songs decorated the background atmosphere of such notable flicks as The Stepfather and (the original) Buffy, the Vampire Slayer. Most iconic was her seductive, smoke drenched warbling on “Back to the Wall”, a track that was featured, prominently, in Nightmare on Elm Street 4.

After the Divinyls’ short reign of hit making was over, Amphlett spent the 90’s as a guest vocalist on recordings by legendary folk artist John Prine and appeared on the stage in her native Australia. (She gets extra pink points for portraying Judy Garland in a production of Boy From Oz.) A (hard-to-find) memoir about her battles with disease was published, as well, proving that not only was she one of rock’s most ferocious beauties, but one of its most eclectic, as well.

Retro Love: George Nader in Robot Monster (1953)

Nowadays, they party afterwards with the Bear Community. Back then it was Gorilla Robots!

There is nothing Big Gay Horror Fan adores more right now than Phil Tucker’s Robot Monster from 1953! Starring homosexual matinee idol George Nader, this glorious mess features cheap desert locales, the use of stock dinosaur footage and rabidly passionate non-acting from much of its cast. (Although the matriarch is played by an actress named Selena Royle. That’s a moniker 1000 drag queens could have a field day with!) The hunky Nader, who was best friends with Rock Hudson in real life, spends much of the film’s 62 minute running time shirtless, as well.

Of course, much of this exercise’s camp appeal comes from the hilarious inappropriateness of its main alien villains – two guys in gorilla suits crowned with silver space helmets. Still, there are a couple parallels to better pictures that may give this film’s viewers a moment of pause. In a moment of Frankenstein solemnity, the film’s youngest heroine meets her downfall at the hands’ of one of the Ro-Man’s. Meanwhile, the film’s focus on the young Jimmy (Gregory Moffett) ultimately has many correlations with the arc of The Wizard of Oz‘s Dorothy.

003Still, one has to wonder what was harder for the masculine Nader – keeping a straight face while filming this Golden Turkey winner or having to play straight to meet Hollywood’s ultra-aggressive ‘Code of Honor’? Unfortunately, I am guessing it was probably the latter.

Still, you can’t complain too much about the silly glories of Robot Monster! Check the trailer below!:

Genre Legends in Other Mediums: Kimberly Beck in Yours, Mine and Ours!

Published February 8, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

According to various published reports – Big Gay Horror Fan was cute as a child. Of course, this has never been truly confirmed.

There is proof positive that genre goddess Kimberly Beck (Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Nightmare at Noon, Massacre at Central High, In the Deep Woods) was adorable as a kid, though. All you have to do is check out her winning performance as Janette North in popular 1968 comedy Yours, Mine and Ours. ymo2

Remade in 2005 with Dennis Quaid and Rene Russo, this frothy family adventure starred icons Henry Fonda and Lucille Ball as a naval couple, whose marriage combines their respective offspring making for a huge family unit of 18 siblings – (7 boys and 11 girls). Of course, there is much tumultuous mayhem and discord among the children until Ball’s unexpected pregnancy forges them all together in one solid bond.

Granted, with a bevy of youngsters –including (then 18 year old) Tim Matheson (Impulse, Buried Alive, Sometimes They Come Back, Wolf Lake), Suzanne Cupito (AKA Morgan Brittany of Dallas fame – and Death Car on the Freeway, Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat), Eric Shea (The Poseidon Adventure) and Tracy Nelson (Fangs, Killer Bees!, The Perfect Tenant) all fighting for attention– there isn’t much screen time to go around.

ymo3But, Beck manages a few fun moments. Whether she is helping Ball prepare for her first date with Fonda, complaining about lack of phone privacy, engaging in a pillow fight with her newly found stepbrothers or helping make sandwiches for her numerous siblings – she is always charming and engaging here.

Tuesday Knight – “Faith”

Published December 7, 2012 by biggayhorrorfan

faith
As Big Gay Horror Fan stumbles down the rocky path of his daily existence, he has often dreamed about musical backgrounds to highlight all of his sharp adventures.

Finally, with Tuesday Knight’s brilliantly eclectic collection Faith, I have found the perfect sonic expression for all of my many moods.

Anchored by Knight’s dusky, expressive growl, the tracks on Faith run the gamut. From perky pop, limb rousing dance, dramatic rock and (even) country, Knight proves she is a woman of many seasons here and the singular goddess of every last one!

Horror fans are most likely to gasp with happiness over the inclusion of Nightmare, the potent (legendary) opening track to Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. Knight exposes herself in all her glory, though, throughout the set list. Fun resolve is the name of the day on kinetic Out of Control while heartache is mined with potent skill on superior Throw Me Away. If It Takes All Night and Little Things would fit perfectly at a 50’s sock hop. Title track, Faith, meanwhile rings with subtle modular changes that ultimately delight.

Faith (which is comprised of 18 total tracks) is available, for a limited time only, from http://www.mp-ent.com/
