Music to Make Horror Movies By: Bronski Beat, “Why?” – Avenging Angel

why
I wonder about a lot of things. Like: How come I had to add that vintage Suzanne Somers doll to my collection? Eventual Answer: Because it makes enacting scenes from Ants a heck of a lot easier!

avenging angelI, however, didn’t question the use of Bronski Beat’s classic 80’s track Why? as the background music for a chase/murder sequence in modern exploitation classic Avenging Angel.

Why?, of course, was one of the first rallying cries for queer acceptance. But Jimmy Sommerville’s determined chanting of “You and me together, fighting for our love” works surprisingly well as AA‘s guardian detective (played by handsome Robert F. Lyons) tries, frantically, to save a comely co-worker’s life.

Here is the original, much admired video of this seminal song:

Scream Queen Flashback: Debi Sue Voorhees

Debi as "Roxie" in Avenging Angel

Debi as “Roxie” in Avenging Angel

In her varied acting career, beloved genre princess Debi Sue Voorhees (AKA Debisue Voorhees and Deborah Voorhees) learned a couple of things about sex.

As Tina, her best known role, 1985’s Friday the 13th: A New Chapter, Voorhees learned that sex can kill after an afternoon tryst found her at the end of a mad man’s blade.

In the same year, her character of Roxie in (the fun and frantic fan favorite) Avenging Angel discovered that selling sex can land you in jail as her prostitute character ends up in the clink after an early evening bust.

Voorhees, who also appeared in little appreciated slasher Appointment with Fear (also 1985) is now a well regarded author who has recently filmed a script she created, Billy Shakespeare , which should be headed to festivals soon. Just another reason to (out and out) love her!
