The Baby Magic’s Rent a Place in Hell

Published February 19, 2016 by biggayhorrorfan

baby magic

Angsty, confrontational and bizarrely fun…no, I am not talking about the group of leather bound lesbian nuns who raised me…but the latest slab of vinyl from Chicago’s favorite art punk band, The Baby Magic!

Fronted by the dynamic Mary Beth Brennan, Rent a Place in Hell not only has a title that belongs in every horror loving music freak’s library, but it is full of propulsive, in your face tunes that simply won’t roll over and play dead when you retire for the night and turn out the lights.

Swirling with a creepy new wave vibe, the title track is, ultimately, an encouraging (if slightly sarcastic) proclamation to follow your dreams despite naysayers and the arduous responsibilities inherent in one’s “meaningless job”. Modern feminist attitudes are happily embraced as numbers such as Don’t Mess With Me and Bad Dog tear apart misogynist attitudes with Brennan’s expert role playing and fierce bite. But, nicely, all of the numbers here, including the aggressive Frank Sinatra and the quirkily poppy Huts, examine societal judgments and restraints with an aim at destroying pedantic thinking and a sheep like acceptance of one’s fate.

Throughout, Brennan is expertly aided by her partners in crime, Patrick Coleman and Santiago Guerrero. Coleman’s guitar and Guerrero’s drums slash, stab and pummel their way through the songs’ often complex and ever changing rhythms with skill and fervent passion, making this 7 song adventure an always stimulating and frequently challenging (in the best way possible) affair.

Brock Riebe’s Incall

Published April 9, 2015 by biggayhorrorfan

incall
Director-writer-performer (Phew! I got tired just writing all of that!) Brock Riebe has stated that his new thriller Incall was inspired by such cult classics as Apartment Zero, Eating Raoul and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.

But, it looks like there may, also, be a bit of Strangers on a Train going on here, as well. What do you think?

For those that are curious (and c’mon, who isn’t?!?) Incall will be screening in Chicago on Friday, April 10th at 8:00 pm at The Nightingale Cinema on 1084 N. Milwaukee.

For all those who can’t make that and are still intrigued about this film, featuring a seemingly innocent masseuse lured into some pretty dangerous activity, be sure to check out the film’s website at:

Derek Joseph Quint’s Danse Macabre

Published October 29, 2014 by biggayhorrorfan

The Catholic Church is always screwing something up! Why, do you remember that time that the Vatican tried to steal Dracula away from his three precious brides – on Halloween, nonetheless? Well, if you don’t, talented, out filmmaker Derek Joesph Quint does and he recounts this incident with humor and screwball energy with his divine short, Danse Macabre.

As, always, Quint proves he is a visual master, here, with inventive costuming and a brilliant use of late night Chicago streets as a backdrop for this cinematic adventure. Its, also, incredibly amusing to watch the reactions of unsuspecting passersby as the action unfolds.danse 2

Featuring a bevy of industrious females, you may need to watch this beauteous wonder a few times – just to determine your favorite bride. Mine is the Blue Bride. Because, just like her, I can’t fly, but I keep on ticking, baby!
