When I mix Siouxsie and Robyn, all I get is a mess. But, when sexy, giallo inspired rock ‘n’ roll architects like My Gold Mask do it? They create a moody, Italian-esque masterpiece like Leave Me Midnight.
This sophisticated slab of wax has been praised by many, since its spring 2013 release, including the editors of Rue Morgue Magazine. One of the throaty, reminiscent tracks will even being featured during an emotional scene of the January 20th, 2014 episode of Being Human , as well. So, it is no surprise that every one of the ten tracks contained, here, would drape, perfectly, over the shoulders of vintage era Martino style sirens like Dagmar Lassander and Edwige Fenech.
The whole affair reaches its summery nadir with the beautifully fun Burn Like the Sun, but what is so impressive about this chilly, cobwebbed pop as a whole, is its strong emotional underpinnings. Lead singer Gretta Rochelle artfully conveys life’s scariest textures – its uncertainties and its emotional regrets – but also makes the whole mess sound so mysteriously exotic that one is compelled to join her (and cohorts Jack Armando and James Andrew) as she travels, bravely, where Night Falls, lost so passionately in her ever buzzing head.
Leave Me Midnight is truly one of this year’s best.
