The Backside of Horror: When A Stranger Calls; When A Stranger Calls Back

Let’s face it, half the fun of horror and exploitation is seeing some hot bodies frolicking around in the buff. And while I worship the female form, I believe exploitation definitely veers into the exploitive when only gorgeous women are on display while their male counterparts remain chastely buttoned up. Therefore, The Backside of Horror salutes the filmmakers and actors whom even up the score a bit by showing us instances of hot and juicy male flesh in their bloody celluloid fantasies.

Awesome genre auteur Fred Walton (April Fools Day) knows a thing or two about naked insanity.

065

In Walton’s 1979 horror masterpiece, When A Stranger Calls, lead psycho Curt Duncan (as passionately played by Tony Beckley) experiences a traumatic emotional breakdown in a men’s homeless shelter. Beckley’s nakedness, here, mirrors the raw agony that his character is experiencing.

Fourteen years later in his follow-up, When A Stranger Calls Back (1993), Walton executes a genius surprise scare. The murderous master in this one, William Landis (the chameleon-like Gene Lythgow) actually blends into the environment of the apartment of the film’s female lead for the final showdown. Stripped down and covered in paint, Lythgow flashes his muscular buttocks, several times, as his maniacal character meets his justified end.

If you like your lamb chops in a van – then Bloody Birthday is the film for you!

vankissFilled to the brim with bountiful breasts (including those of comedienne-writer-singer Julie Brown), Ed Hunt’s fairly beloved slasher Bloody Birthday (1981) also contains a nice spectacle of male nudity when handsome John Avery (as Boy in Van) and his onscreen paramour Sylvia Wright, playing Girl in Van (naturally), try to escape the murderous machinations of the young Curtis (played by Billy Jayne of Nightmares, Cujo and Demonwarp).vanbillykill

They are unsuccessful, of course, but not before lucky viewers get a buttocks heavy view of the flailing Avery!

fear1In his 1981 emotionally charged horror flick Fear No Evil, director Frank LaLoggia (Lady in White) was reportedly working through his feelings of alienation as a gay youth by depicting the story of a young outsider (Stefan Arngrim from Land of the Giants and Class of 1984) whom is wracked to discover that he is destined to become the personification of Satan on earth.

In direct opposition to usual terror fare, the shower scene here takes place in the guy’s locker room and even includes a very wet, very naked kiss between Arngrim’s Andrew and his prime tormentor, Tony (Daniel Eden). fear2

Arngrim, also, shows his stuff upon emerging from the bed of beautiful of Katherine Rowe McAllen (Julie) in a nightmare sequence.

The Backside of Horror: Damian Ladd, “Demon Resurrection” (2008)

The only thing Big Gay Horror Fan ever witnessed in a nude state growing up in the country was – cows!!!

demon2Luckily, for lovers o’ male sweetness, Damian Ladd, whom actually offers up a quietly effective performance as the concerned John in 2008’s Demon Resurrection, shows us a bit more for our money. Worried over the emotional state of his cult rescued honey, Grace, Ladd-John reflects back on better times.

These times, thankfully, include some tree side, outdoors romancing – an advent that gives us a nice look at Ladd’s round n healthy globes o’ love.demon1

Actually, coming on like a mixture of Night of the Living Dead meets Creepozoids by way of the recently reimagined Evil Dead, Demon Resurrection may be worth looking at for a few other reasons, as well.

The Backside of Horror: Dan Shor, “Strange Behavior” – 1981

While he frolicked with the effervescent Dey Young (Rock n Roll High School) in 1981’s mad scientist-kids gone bad epic Strange Behavior (directed by the openly gay Bill Condon of Gods and Monsters, Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh and Strange Invaders fame), it is in one of the film’s opening scenes that cute, mop headed Dan Shor (Tron, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure) revealed all that his momma, naturally, gave him.

001As young hero, Paul Brady, Shor lives, alone, with his law enforcement pop, John. In a moment of casual ‘guy-ness’, Shor-Paul enters the bathroom, butt naked, as his father finishes up shaving. Sleepy and patiently, he waits until dad completes his ritual and then he moves into the shower – giving viewers a nice (and long) viewing vantage of Shor’s taut ‘n dimpled cheeks.

Um-m, thanks, Bill!!! (In fact, Condon’s and Shor’s efficiency here makes this one of the sexiest moments in early 80’s horror.)

The Backside of Horror: Landon Liboiron in “Hemlock Grove”

Liboiron fires up for The Howling!

The up and coming Landon Liboiron has been going to the wolves since his bespectacled turn in 2011’s The Howling: Reborn. There, as the artistic Will, Liboiron fights against his hairier instincts and the overwhelming power of his seductively villianous mother, played by Ivana Milcevic.

Landon Liboiron 09But as the rough hewn gypsy Peter Rumancek in the original Netflix series Hemlock Grove (2013), Liboiron completely accepts his inner werewolf (with the help of scrappy mommy, Lynda, played by the stellar Lili Taylor). Thankfully, for sharp clawed viewers, this has allowed the committed Liboiron to go all ‘David Naughton’ on our behalf as he exposes his butt cheeks in a transformation sequence (early on in the proceedings) and during a seduction scene with the beguiling Penelope Mitchell (a bit later on in the show’s chronology).

Roman and 'Momma' watch Peter transform!

Roman and ‘Momma’ watch Peter transform!

Interestingly, as Roman Godfrey, the town’s resident bad boy, actor Bill Skarsgård presents a character whose love for Liboiron’s Rumancek just might go beyond the awkward embraces of bro-mance. Although, the only physical evidence of this is Godfrey-Skarsgård’s anguish at Rumancek’s (seeming) abandoning betrayal at the show’s (13 episode) conclusion.

The Backside of Horror: Ken Abraham, “Creepozoids”, “Deadly Embrace”.

Published May 20, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

creepozoids14
For gay old school horror lovers, Ken Abraham is the one name in terror history that probably brings instant happiness.

Bursting with brash attitude and a compelling presence, Abraham brought star quality to such low budget genre epics as Terror Night, Creepozoids, Vampire Nights, Mind, Body and Soul and Vice Academy.

More significantly, to those of certain orientations, Abraham offered himself up as one of the few male cult icons who was confident enough to reveal as much flesh as his female co-stars.

CreepozoidsAbraham’s most iconic image of nude frolicking is most likely from David DeCoteau’s post-apocalyptic monster flick Creepozoids (1987). As Butch, one of a band of weary survivors, Abraham finds momentary comfort from the dusty gloom by taking a much appreciated, rump baring shower with genre icon Linnea Quigley.

Two years later, in 1989 T and A thriller Deadly Embrace (helmed by DeCoteau under his Ellen Cabot pseudonym), Abraham once again rolled out the globule delights. As the hunky houseboy hired by a murderously, sex-minded society wife, Abraham found himself far from the noir classics of the 40’s. Yet, this cheesy, fun exercise allowed Abraham to show both his tender and cocky side and plenty of ass-cheek, as well.ken deadly embrace

Abraham continued to act in such genre efforts as Joss Whedon’s Angel and The Forgotten (with Julianne Moore) until 2004 when his successful career as an editor and producer began to take his full attention.

This fun trailer for Creepozoids features some tongue happy Quigley-Abraham shower action!:

The Backside of Horror: Mark Metcalf in “The Final Terror”

Published April 23, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

Best known to scare enthusiasts for providing thrills of the evil incarnate variety as The Master on the Buffy, the Vampire Slayer television series, serious character actor Mark Metcalf found himself naked and on the other side of the terror-giving in (1981 lensed, 1983 released) slasher The Final Terror.finalterror3

As Mike, the kind chaperone of a group of wayward teens (including Grease 2‘s Adrian Zmed and soon-to-be superstars Daryl Hannah and Rachel Ward) on a wilderness outing, Metcalf makes the unfortunate decision to relax with a quick skinny-dip while searching for one of his wards.

marksexSurprised by his girlfriend Melanie (played by the adorable Cindy Harrell), Metcalf is soon bearing his lean booty for crafty cinema-goers as the two prescribe to a little forest loving.

Of course, anyone with their horror stripes knows that even consensual copulation means a horrible death in early 80’s horror flicks. Therefore, Metcalf/Mike’s howling orgasm turns into yodels of pain as the film’s mountainside maniac does him in with a crafty sickle in the back.

Thankfully, Metcalf’s death is one of the film’s more memorable ones and his rump bearing, itself, is notable in a genre that frequently fetishizes the feminine virtues and not the male’s.

The Backside of Horror: Cameron Dye in 1988’s “Out of the Dark”

“You’re just a kid, you know that? But, you’re a naughty little boy!” – Kristi to Kevin, “Out of the Dark

The last time Big Gay Horror Fan played sports in the nude, he was 6 months old and playing kick ball in his momma’s tummy.

Thankfully, for appreciators of fine male flesh, handsome Cameron Dye (The Last Starfighter) shows just what he is made of while playing a game of one on one in 1988 slasher/police procedural Out of the Dark.

Dye with Mayo-Chandler

Dye with Mayo-Chandler

Centering around a group of phone sex worker/actresses who are being murdered by a psychotic clown, Out of the Dark can be recommended almost solely by its amazing cast. Filled with genre regulars like Karen Black(Trilogy of Terror, Burnt Offerings, House of 1000 Corpses), Karen Witter (Buried Alive, Popcorn, Midnight, The Vineyard), Starr Andreeff (Dance of the Damned, The Vampire Journals, The Terror Within, Amityville: Dollhouse) and Karen Mayo-Chandler (Stripped to Kill II, 976-Evil II, Hard to Die), OOTD, also, features cameo appearances from exploitation regulars/faded Hollywood greats as Divine, Lainie Kaizan, Tab Hunter (whose bit as a surprised motorist is some of his best on camera footage) and Paul Bartel. Add character actors like Geoffrey Lewis, Bud Cort (Harold and Maude), Silvana Gilardo and Tracy Walter into the mix and you have a low budget cinephile’s paradise!cameronshot

Here, Dye plays Kevin Silver, a photographer with access to all the victims, as his girlfriend, Kristi (perky Lynn Danielson), works with them. As police investigators examine the consistently half-naked Silver’s muddied past, he and Kristi decide to unwind with a game of basketball. Kristi has other ideas, though. As Kevin/Dye goes to take the first shot, she pulls down his shorts giving the audience a nice view of his svelte globes o’ loving! Later as things continue to escalate, the two seek further solace in a passionate romp in a sleazy hotel, offering us a nice side view of Dye’s healthy assets, as well.

Dye and Danielson.

Dye and Danielson.

Of course, this being a (slightly predictable)exploitation gem, even though Kevin/Dye often shows us, here, that he has nothing to hide – the film’s final scene just may reveal he has more circus mayhem in his blood than previously thought.

Proving that male beauty translates well in any language, here is a French trailer for Out of the Dark featuring many of this film’s highlights:

The Backside of Horror: Wes Ramsey in “Dark Honeymoon”!

Published March 11, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

Redundancy is usually a bad thing (Um – Bush, Jr. TWICE, anyone?!?), but occasionally it has its benefits.

latter%20daysTake Wes Ramsey (Brotherhood of Blood, Dracula’s Guest), for example. Ramsey became a gay favorite by showing off almost all of his dramatic skills in the 2003 party boy on Mormon lad odyssey Latter Days. (And you thought Trey Parker and Matt Stone were being original!) Thankfully, this delightful thespian returned to the flesh filled scene of the crime, four years later, by showing off those butt checks again in demented horror-thriller Dark Honeymoon (2007, released 2008). Here, Ramsey also proved he has something in common with the esteemed Janet Leigh. Yes, his shower, as the masculine, girl banging Jay does turn out particularly bad!photo (7)

Dark Honeymoon’s best attribute (sideswiping Ramsey’s moon, of course) is the amazing variety of former A-Listers who appear, briefly, to get done in by Lindy Booth’s deliciously insane Kathryn. Yes, Eric Roberts, Tia Carrere and Daryl Hannah all encounter this religious lass’ wraith (or do they asks the malicious trick ending) while the amazing Roy Scheider presides over it all with a watchful eye!
