Facing the Strange Changes at the Music Box of Horrors!

“Turn and face the strange changes!” Yes, even those who aren’t fans of David Bowie (Does such a creature exist??!!??) are sometimes compelled to do what this master musician suggests. They simply have no choice.

Take Kathleen Burke’s exotic Panther Woman from the 1932 classic Island of Lost Souls and Susan Strasberg’s beautiful Karen Tandy from 1978 oddity The Manitou, for example. Both find their bodies going through increasingly weird scenarios – and both have to deal with the odd circumstances, head on.

Lucky Midwesterners will get to experience the adventures of these highly memorable creations at October 19th’s anticipated Music Box of Horrors, a 24 hour film festival. Taking place at the historic Music Box Theatre, located at 3733 N. Southport in Chicago, this 2nd annual event, also, features screenings of Maniac Cop 2, Crawlspace and Possession along with special guests, including famed exploitation directors William Lustig (Maniac) and David Schmoeller (Tourist Trap).

“Don’t go to sleep!” How well I remember the bloodied horny goat who pounced on my chest while chanting that! Or is it just a flashback from all those 3 a.m. viewings of the A Nightmare on Elm Street series? H-m-m…

Whatever the case may be — two of the Nightmare family will be gracing Chicago-land with their bloodily awesome presences this weekend.

massacre

Mark Patton from A Nightmare on Elm St 2: Freddy’s Revenge will be appearing at The Movieside Massacre, a 24 horror movie event, for a presentation of the film that shows off his eclectic acting skills, the power of naked screaming and so much more. Speaking of shrieking (in delight, that is), I will be interviewing Patton after the screening! Yahoo!

Here are the details for that event:

Big Gay Horror Fan has a talent for digging up old insecurities – and that damned tan sweater vest keeps showing up a lot, as well! Thankfully, filmmaker Michael Lee Stever has a better idea about things worthy of reviving.

His engaging looking new documentary short Resurrecting Carrie chronicles the history of Stephen King’s favored heroine from book to screen to stage to stage, again!

Featuring interview footage with the likes of Piper Laurie, Resurrecting Carrie will show on June 1st at the Macabre Faire Film Fest in Rockville Centre, New York.

But, for those of us that can’t make that awesome sounding event, the below teaser trailer gives a good look into the bloody joys of Stever’s take on the amazing journey of everyone’s beloved revenge fueled underdog:

Getting “Reddy” for Felicia Day and C2E2 2013!

Published April 26, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

Red-Werewolf-Hunter-209x300

After spending several years being raised by those feral Amazonian mountain women there is nothing Big Gay Horror Fan appreciates more than a flame haired goddess with a gun! Thus the image of the ever eclectic Felicia Day as Red in 2010’s Red: Werewolf Hunter is the perfect way to start off every Friday for me! Well, especially, Friday, April 26th – which marks the beginning of Day’s three day appearance at Chicago’s hope grown geek delight C2E2 (www.c2e2.com).

felicia day redOf course, the powerful, all too human Red was just another color notch in Day’s already rainbow hued talent. Whether she is sweetly singing as a hopeful human rights activist in Jess Whedon’s fan favorite Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog or providing mischievous escape in her own delightful project The Guild, Day provides vulnerability and excessive quirk – just the right combination for many a discerning viewer.

charlieOne of her most recent roles, the recurring character of Charlie Bradbury on the popular spook show Supernatural should ensure Day’s place as a queer icon (if she isn’t already), as well. As the gay Bradbury, Day is an amazing combination of goofy brightness, timid determination and crafty wonder. Sam and Dean need this lady at their side, at all times!! (Or if they don’t – I do!)

Be sure to keep up with all of Day’s zany musings and insanely awesome projects at www.feliciaday.com!

Cinema Wasteland Celebration (featuring Brinke Stevens and Debra DeLiso)!

Published April 4, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

Slumbermassacre
High school reunion? Forget it! But a reunion of the casts of 1981’s Just Before Dawn and 1982’s Slumber Party Massacre (which has high queer appeal for lesbian author Rita Mae Brown’s script participation , its female director and strong female characters)?!? Big Gay Horror Fan is all for that!

cinema wastelandThankfully, the wicked and wizened powers-that-be at Cinema Wasteland (www.cinemawasteland.com) are holding just such get-togethers over the weekend of April 5th, 2013 in Strongsville, OH. JBD’s Jamie Rose, Chris Lemmon and director Jeff Lieberman will be on hand for signings and screenings while Brinke Stevens, Debra DeLiso, Joseph Johnson and Michael Villella (the original Driller Killer, himself!)will be on hand for SPM.

Of course, Stevens is a horror powerhouse with endless credits in the genre. 1998’s Victoria’s Shadow, one of her little known efforts, is certainly for Brinke fanatics only, but the Stevens on display here is delicious. Stevens has always been incisive in her portrayals involving the dualities of certain characters (see Haunted Fear and Teenage Exorcist) and her Victoria in Victoria’s Shadow is no exception. Bitten by a vampire as a young maiden in the 19th Century, Victoria is reawakened to the modern world with a fervent hunger. Stevens radiates with unrestrained evil as she tears into old men and her old beau’s girlfriend with eye flashing vengeance. A particularly groundbreaking scene features Stevens’ Victoria feeding on a child whom she has strung up, upside down, from a tree. A set piece constructed of skulls in the film’s final moments gives the eternally beautiful Stevens a haunted resting place, as well.brinke

While not as well versed in the antics of terror, Stevens’ Slumber Party co-star Debra DeLiso was the heroine of the ski slope slasher Iced (1988, written by and co-starring fellow SPM guest Johnson) and made a deliciously aggressive appearance on cult television show Sledge Hammer as an extremely athletic, revenge minded member of a satanic cult.

debraPortraying Angel on the 1987 “State of Sledge” episode (Season 1, Episode 14), DeLiso is an unrepentant, comic delight. Whether slinging around weights, jumping from air vents on top of the series’ regulars or maniacally leading the charge to rescue the cult’s leader played comedian Mark Blankfield (Jekyll and Hyde…Together Again, Dracula: Dead and Loving It), DeLiso is always an eye catching delight.

Be sure to catch up with Stevens, DeLiso (and Big Gay Horror Fan) at this weekend’s Cinema Wasteland!

Meanwhile, Big Gay Horror Fan is always exclaiming the delights of his beloved femmes of terror at https://www.facebook.com/BigGayHorrorFan!
