Great Buckets of Blood! No, Big Gay Horror Fan is not talking about old school Roger Corman in this instance. I am actually referring to sexy Brazilian pop band Goo Goes Laves and their horror inspired video for their upbeat track “Get in! Get Out! Jump!”

Filled with spooky houses, scar sporting villains and driller killers galore, this rambunctious offering ultimately gives you the choice of three endings – naturally resulting in a genre filled morning of fun.

Room 237 – An Appreciation.

Published April 20, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

The Shining 028
At a recent dinner celebration at the piping hot Godzilla Café, Big Gay Horror Fan’s beloved Aunt Pamela (a vegan witch, naturally) made a charming and pertinent observation. She noted that the art of the appreciator was often neglected in social and cultural importance – IE that the act of appreciating is just as much of an art form as that of the person doing the creating.

Rodney Ascher’s truly engaging, frequently mindboggling documentary Room 237 takes this notion to grand heights. Highlighting the observations of a handful of devotees to Stanley Kubrick’s highly debated 1980 film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining, Room 237 revels in obsessive fan love and features highly detailed theories on Kubrick’s artistic intent.

Creatively, Ascher never shows the faces of his subjects, but uses clips from Kubrick’s oeuvre (including massive segments of The Shining) to illustrate the interviewee’s points. True horror fans are, also, sure to delight in his liberal use of crowd scenes from Italian gore fests Demons and Demons 2 to help augment the situations described, as well.

Some of the theories introduced are fairly ludicrous (making even the most rampaging nerd feel a bit more normal than he or she did before watching the documentary). One interested party is fully invested in the thought that Kubrick used this film to let the world know his part in helping the government fake the moon landing. (That he then goes on question the validity of this claim in the film’s wrap-up makes the concept even more noteworthy.)

ShelleyDuvall4Of course, anyone who has seen the subject film (and lusted after Shelley Duvall’s prairie-like yet seemingly eternal costumes) knows that Kubrick obviously ladled on the influences with this one. So the participants in Room 237 that suggest that he may have been working out his feelings on the Holocaust and the treatment of the American Indians may have some valid points. But, was that the entire extent of his focus (or something that he was even conscious of doing in the moment) – well, who the hell knows?!?

Other funny theories about subtle erections, media manipulation and disappearing Disney images – all seem purely accidental, mere mistakes that Kubrick missed with his over-the-top, highly stylistic directing of this glorious piece of cinema.

Ultimately, Room 237 illustrates how much a work takes on the spirit of the viewer once it is released into the world – giving all the detailed summaries an honest validity of sorts. Perhaps most importantly, for anyone whom has ever obsessed over a certain genre, filmmaker or film, Room 237 brings about a sense of kinship and, as my dear Aunt Pamela suggested, the thought that the audience is just as important as those behind the camera.

Further information about Room 237 can be gathered at www.room237movie.com.

Redemption for Rehtaeh Parsons.

Published April 18, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

rehtaeh
Big Gay Horror Fan prefers the frightening fantasies of film, but we all know that real life is filled with a multitude of horrors that need to be addressed.

In November 2011, 15 year old Rehtaeh Parsons was raped by 4 young men in Nova Scotia. They uploaded the photos of the attack onto various media outlets and then continually harassed Parsons. Unable to handle any further abuse, the kind and artistic Parsons recently took her life at the age of 17.

Apparently, despite some seemingly hardcore evidence, public officials believed it came down to a ‘he said-she said’ situation and no charges were pressed in the case. This week a family friend created a petition for Change.org begging for an investigation into the details of how Rehteah’s situation was handled.

Now, there has been enough outcry that officials are willing to look into the matter. But, I urge you to sign the below petition to truly ensure that this matter is fully addressed.

Rehtaeh deserves this outpouring of love and a posthumous acknowledgement of the wrongs that were done to her.

Judith Evelyn: The Tingler’s Eternally Regal Victim!

Published April 16, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

At the undead café the greedy zombie hustlers all swirl around Big Gay Horror Fan – until they realize that he has no money to spend. Then, penniless and alone, I make my exit.

Evelyn in 'Thriller'

Evelyn in ‘Thriller’

Such grand victimhood was elevated to perfect heights by acclaimed stage actress Judith Evelyn (1913-1967) throughout her cinematic career. But, while this regal dame was often seen as the gaslight ridden heiress or meeting her fate at the hands of some William Castle inspired lunacy, in reality she was one of the few survivors of a torpedoed ship (the Athenia in the Irish Sea in 1939) and in one of her most famous Broadway roles, The Shrike, she played a woman who drove her husband to madness.

Well rehearsed Joan and toned Jeff!

Well rehearsed Joan and toned Jeff!

But in 1955’s Female on the Beach, Evelyn portrayed Eloise Crandall, a victim of an aging gigolo’s (played by toned, silver haired Jeff Chandler) fake love. Dancing between swooning and despondent, Evelyn makes quite an appearance here. Still, this is Joan Crawford’s show. Taking over the house that Crandall was renting, Crawford soon discovers the mysteries behind her seeming suicide. Crawford’s every over-telegraphed reaction is perfect (even after multiple viewings) and the masculine, frequently shirtless Chandler isn’t half bad to look at either.

Of course, Evelyn’s most recognizable role to terror teens came in 1959’s The Tingler. Recommended by Vincent Price, whose admiration of her stemmed from a stage production in which both had appeared, Evelyn brings a proud bearing to her mute Martha Higgins. Higgins, of course, meets her fate at the ‘hands’ of the titular Tingler because she cannot scream in fear.Judith_Evelyn_in_The_Tingler_trailer

The 1961 “What Beckoning Ghost” episode of the Boris Karloff hosted Thriller also ended badly for the consistent Ms. Evelyn. Her Mildred Beaumont is a classical pianist with a bad heart. Ringing with devotion for her husband, Evelyn’s eyes soon rim with petrified despair. Beaumont’s husband and seemingly devoted sister soon drive her out of her mind and into her grave. But, as with most Thriller episodes, their wicked victory is short lived.

Evelyn, herself, passed away at 54 from cancer. But avid cine-maniacs can spot her ageless grace and sophisticated delicacy in any home theater from a mile away.

Music to Make Horror (er-r-r – Fantasy) Films By: Kevin Hanna’s Rose’s Colored Glasses!

Published April 14, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

Through the fog drenched parking lot of the noir style gym where Big Gay Horror Fan works out, a pack of the ravenously handsome men (that he had been cruising within) descended upon him. Well, actually it was a group of wilding dogs that smelled the barbeque on his sweatpants – but when you’re desperate, who’s complaining?!?

The delightful Rose in evocative director Kevin Hanna’s forthcoming musical short Rose’s Colored Glasses actually envisions fantasies of a brighter hue, however, whenever she dons her magical spectacles. The dramatic twists in this piece actually allow her to eventually confront her life, head on, as well. H-m-m… Imagination and truth in equal basis – sounds like a remedy for a successful life, Rose!

Crinoline Head – Fashion to Die For!

Published April 10, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

When it comes to fashion Big Gay Horror Fan can’t tell a jean jacket from a leather thong.

Thankfully, talented director Tommy Faircloth truly knows that a sense of style has other ways of being murderous. His acclaimed 1995 film Crinoline Head features a lead killer whom wears his mother’s skirt on his scalp while going about acts of bloody mayhem.

A fan favorite from far back, due to various theatrical runs and a VHS distribution, Faircloth is currently raising money to offer his zany slasher homage on DVD.

Cinema Wasteland Celebration (featuring Brinke Stevens and Debra DeLiso)!

Published April 4, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

Slumbermassacre
High school reunion? Forget it! But a reunion of the casts of 1981’s Just Before Dawn and 1982’s Slumber Party Massacre (which has high queer appeal for lesbian author Rita Mae Brown’s script participation , its female director and strong female characters)?!? Big Gay Horror Fan is all for that!

cinema wastelandThankfully, the wicked and wizened powers-that-be at Cinema Wasteland (www.cinemawasteland.com) are holding just such get-togethers over the weekend of April 5th, 2013 in Strongsville, OH. JBD’s Jamie Rose, Chris Lemmon and director Jeff Lieberman will be on hand for signings and screenings while Brinke Stevens, Debra DeLiso, Joseph Johnson and Michael Villella (the original Driller Killer, himself!)will be on hand for SPM.

Of course, Stevens is a horror powerhouse with endless credits in the genre. 1998’s Victoria’s Shadow, one of her little known efforts, is certainly for Brinke fanatics only, but the Stevens on display here is delicious. Stevens has always been incisive in her portrayals involving the dualities of certain characters (see Haunted Fear and Teenage Exorcist) and her Victoria in Victoria’s Shadow is no exception. Bitten by a vampire as a young maiden in the 19th Century, Victoria is reawakened to the modern world with a fervent hunger. Stevens radiates with unrestrained evil as she tears into old men and her old beau’s girlfriend with eye flashing vengeance. A particularly groundbreaking scene features Stevens’ Victoria feeding on a child whom she has strung up, upside down, from a tree. A set piece constructed of skulls in the film’s final moments gives the eternally beautiful Stevens a haunted resting place, as well.brinke

While not as well versed in the antics of terror, Stevens’ Slumber Party co-star Debra DeLiso was the heroine of the ski slope slasher Iced (1988, written by and co-starring fellow SPM guest Johnson) and made a deliciously aggressive appearance on cult television show Sledge Hammer as an extremely athletic, revenge minded member of a satanic cult.

debraPortraying Angel on the 1987 “State of Sledge” episode (Season 1, Episode 14), DeLiso is an unrepentant, comic delight. Whether slinging around weights, jumping from air vents on top of the series’ regulars or maniacally leading the charge to rescue the cult’s leader played comedian Mark Blankfield (Jekyll and Hyde…Together Again, Dracula: Dead and Loving It), DeLiso is always an eye catching delight.

Be sure to catch up with Stevens, DeLiso (and Big Gay Horror Fan) at this weekend’s Cinema Wasteland!
