It may have been tough for Regina, a perky ‘80s pop wonder, when her vocal style was called out for being too reminiscent of Madonna’s. The talented songstress had already fronted a popular New Wave band and had her lyrics covered by other established artists.

But this last week, Baby Love, her most notable song, proved to be far more irksome to Scream Queens’ most pompous rascal, Chad Radwell (the irreplaceable Glen Powell). As Chanel Oberline, the character’s glorious intended, marched down the aisle to the song’s sweetly unforgettable bubble gum aura , the audience soon was surprised by the plummeting lifelessness of Radwell’s body as it hit the altar, dead on impact!

The song’s innocent joyfulness was the perfect contrast to the macabre circumstances and proved, once and for all, that pop music is, indeed, killer!

Deanna Dunagan Debuts on The Exorcist!

There’s been a bloody train attack, drunken backstage antics, much creepy evidence of possession… and tonight on the fourth episode of Fox’s The Exorcist, Nana is coming out from underneath the bed!

Yes, tonight is the debut of Tony award winning actress Deanna Dunagan (The Visit’s powerful Nana) as Mother Bernadette, someone who seems poised to assist Ben Daniels’ Father Keane in his efforts to understand the devilish activities that are currently occurring in the show’s universe.

Nicely, the appearance of Dunagan marks the addition of another multi-talented female performer to a show that already has been graced by the presence of Oscar winner Geena Davis, committed Midwest theater artist Kirsten Fitzgerald and the stunning Brianne Howey, whose brings a tart anguish to Kat, the young woman whose first tentative stabs at lesbianism were brought to a crashing halt.

I can’t wait for more!

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Gossip

Gossip, the (now defunct) band headed by the gloriously full voiced (and deliciously outspoken) Beth Ditto, always seemed to have its pulse on both joyous empowerment and the angst ridden underside of culture. Never was this truer than with their 2009 (major label) release Music for Men. Filled with diatribes against inadequate lovers and odes to being true to one’s self (see Men in Love), the jittery and ominous undertones of the music here seems to perfectly fit the anxious times that we are currently experiencing in this age of Clinton vs. Trump.

The dark swells that erupt beneath the track Vertical Rhythm are a perfect example of this:

If I know one thing it is that country superstar Loretta Lynn is fierce. What I didn’t know, and what her 8^th number one song Trouble in Paradise proves, is that this western legend is a prize winning devil hunter, as well.

In a tight Kenny O’Dell composition, the grand dame of ass kicking takes care of some demon women who are threatening to steal her man’s soul – in less than 3 minutes, a record if there ever was one!

Dinner with Herschell

Creatively, he revolutionized the horror genre by inventing an offshoot that revolved around excessive gore. Due to his business acumen, you can probably blame a lot of the junk mail that fills your mail boxes on him, as well. Meanwhile, personally, filmmaker Herschell Gordon Lewis, who died this week at the age of 90, was a compelling presence whose commands were not to be ignored – even by the youngest of us.

I know this.

It’s mid-October of 2011 and Lewis is appearing at a 24 hour horror movie marathon in Chicago. In the evening, a few of us retire to a pub, next door, for dinner. Lewis is, happily, leading the conversation, taking our enthusiastic questions and giving them detailed and energetic answers. He is in his element except — a child in a high chair is letting out high pitched and elastic screeches, every couple of minutes or so, in the booth directly behind us. Each shriek jolts him out of his reveries and it is obvious, as time wears on, that he is losing all patience.

Finally, as the cranky babe lets out another voluminous wail, Lewis raises himself up, with grave dignity, and still seated, bellows out, in the direction of the child, with Greek authoritarianism, “STOP – THAT – NOW!” Each word is a separate thought, punctuated with irritation and will.

The toddler halts mid-cry and…is totally and completely silent for the rest of the meal.

Now perhaps, there are two sides of the table to fall on, socially, here. One side will be sympathetic towards struggling parents with infants and understanding of the need to get out with friends and colleagues, sometimes even with a whiney child in tow. The other side may feel, emphatically, that, in the name of common courtesy, children should be kept at home until they are more manageable. Good points, each.

But…I have a feeling that both sides can agree on the fact that even a mewling babe knew that it was important, if not vital, to listen to and obey Herschell Gordon Lewis – a sure and fabulous testament to his effective worth, if there ever was one!

So, Rest in Peace (whoops, I almost wrote ‘piece’), you crazy and creative bastard! You will be missed.

Music to Make Horror Movies by: Lauren Bacall

She had one of the most distinctive speaking voices of all time and the irreplaceable Lauren Bacall also used those smoky tones to subtle singing effect in such Broadway musicals as Applause and Woman of the Year.

Best known for her alluring performances in a series of noir classics with (her beloved, first husband) Humphrey Bogart, Bacall jumped on the early ‘80s slasher bandwagon by playing a theatrical diva whose life and limb (and sequin suits) were threatened by a smooth and menacing stalker (of the self loathing variety) in the underperforming (but twisted and enjoyable) The Fan.

Of course, here she is in complete control, singing I Wrote the Book (to a devoted Wayne Newton and others) from Woman of the Year, a role that won her a second Tony award.

…and if that doesn’t make you want to do a soft shoe, in the afterlife, with an old school diva…then nothing will.

Deanna Dunagan Joins The Exorcist

The divine Deanna Dunagan may go down in history as having created one of the creepiest and most emotionally present villainesses with her take on Nana in M. Night Shyamalan’s 2015 return to form, The Visit. But, she has also given the horror universe another powerful female player with her recent appearance on the third season of FX’s The Strain. Here, playing Ancharia, a powerful medieval tutor and savior to (series regular) Quinlan, Dunagan provided the episode with its heartfelt core and made us long to see more of her in this masterfully created universe. deanna-strain

Now, Dunagan promises to provide even more strength of will in her recurring role as Mother Bernadette on Fox’s The Exorcist. This reimagining of the classic film and William Peter Blatty novel stars Academy Award winning actress Geena Davis and makes its debut on Friday, September 23^rd, 2016. Dunagan’s first appearance will be on the 4^th episode with more “visits” to follow in forthcoming installments.

Stay Out of the Woods

While many terror fans have been focusing on the forest dwelling scares of Blair Witch of late, true connoisseurs of cheesy ‘80s grue have been, eagerly, keeping their eyes on Stay Out of the Woods, the indie horror sequel to the cult classic slasher, Don’t Go in the Woods…Alone.

Working closely with James Bryan, the director of the original, writer-director Henry Frias Leon promises lots of zaniness and gore in this what if/parody.

Review: Night Terrors

While, perhaps, considered blasphemous by some, this critic maintains that Night Terrors‘ killer Santa segment provides more visceral enjoyment than the classic And All Through the House from 1972’s Tales from the Crypt. Sorry, Joan and friends!

Here, a rampaging Claus obliterates a group of likeable punks in a rundown house. Full of humor and bloody mayhem, this jolly (yet very murderous) stranger makes quick work of these youths in a variety of brutal ways and then, thankfully, makes his way onto the typical (and very annoying) suburban family next door. Interestingly, the fact that writer Alex Lukens and director Jason Link create very enjoyable and relatable victims makes the violence seem all the more random and unnecessary. These are the type of people that populate your favorite local bands or write that anarchistic blog that you adore and are the exact opposite of the obnoxious and privileged denizens of the popular slasher projects from the ‘80s. Thus, their demises, while fun, are littered with a touch of rare poignancy. nt-santa

Baby Killer, the second story in this well executed independent horror anthology from Weird on Top Pictures, benefits from some emotional immediacy, as well. Here, writer-director Lukens goes for broke, creating some of the film’s most disturbing visuals, including the savage murder of a young child, as a mad scientist-type goes on a killing spree trying to save his dying daughter. Although, actor Richard Hackel fills his determined patriarch with such anguished passion that it is hard not to feel for him. Meanwhile, Miranda Howard’s Sandy is equally effective as she, valiantly, fights for her life and that of her unborn child.

nt-baby-killer The final story, Abstinence, is full of gooey madness as a viral infection, caused by sexual contact, takes its toll on a college campus. Most notably, actors Sean Jones and Joe Bachan add plenty of bro-type humor while Asia Rain is an effectively attractive presence as the woman worth dying for.

Admirably filmed on a budget of $5000 with mostly non-actor types, Night Terrors even succeeds with its wrap-around segment, featuring an annoyed older sister (the invigorating Alyssa Benner) spinning scary tales to her relentlessly sleepless brother (a cutely exasperating Dominic Crawford).
