Clap those (tiny) Michael Myers’ hands together. Dynamic filmmaking duo Marcy Boyle and Rachel Holzman (aka DPYX) are putting together a documentary about beloved, influential producer Debra Hill (Halloween, The Fog, Escape from LA, Clue, Big Top Peewee)!

A passionate voice for equality in film during her lifetime, Hill (1950 – 2005) has long deserved such an impressive showcase.

You can keep track of this sure to be scintillating project at https://www.facebook.com/DebraHillDoc.

Talking with Deadly Spawn’s Douglas McKeown

Published January 14, 2015 by biggayhorrorfan

Holy man-eating aliens! 31FilmTalk posted a portion of my interview with The Deadly Spawn‘s director Douglas McKeown from this past October’s The Massacre. We talk a lot about the inherent feminism in the piece and the degree to which McKeown was involved with the cult classic’s special effects, here.

More people have died doing comedy than in any slasher film on record. Thankfully, Slumber Party Massacre veteran Debra De Liso, the force behind dozens (and dozens!) of theatrical productions, knows what she is tangling with when taking on the goddesses of humor.

Along with her glorious co-stars Abbe Kanter and Michael Jaye, De Liso shows off her subtle physical skills and fine sense of timing in the Tyrants of Therapy sketch Mobile Sex Therapy.

Be sure to giggle all the way to De Liso’s website http://www.debradeliso.com, as well.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Got A Girl

Published January 11, 2015 by biggayhorrorfan

got a girl
She’s a little bit Nancy Sinatra (or, perhaps, more accurately Francoise Hardy)…and a little bit sequel queen. Indeed, with roles in The Ring 2, Final Destination 3 and re-imaginings of Black Christmas and The Thing, the lovely Mary Elizabeth Winstead has been one of the most visible actresses in the terror genre since the millennium struck red.

Always engaging, Winstead, whose other genre credits include Wolf Lake and Death Proof, has recently formed Got A Girl with Dan the Automator. Focused on their love of 60s beats and French pop, their collaboration is a swirling delight.

Filled with odd strokes of tension and a John Barry-like flair, did we live too fast, the first track off their full length offering i love you but i must drive off this cliff now is, truly, one of their best moments.

Ari Lehman welcomes you to ZADD!

Ari Lehman welcomes you to ZADD!

Mom always told me wearing that sweater vest would get me into trouble. Now, it’s gotten me killed!!

But, it’s all good! Playing a properly attired business type in Deadly Spawn writer/director Douglas McKeown’s new zombie short ZADD was a shambling blast! Now, this mini monster-piece is finally available for free viewing, online:

Shot and edited in 24 hours (by the ultra amazing Jayme Joyce) and featuring such talents as Friday the 13th‘s Ari Lehman, genre artist Mitch O’Connell (and infant son), Double Page Spread‘s Wendi Freeman and Chateau Grrr ‘s Chad Hawks, I have to say that I am pretty proud of this little adventure in 50s style horror filmmaking.

Now, rock a mean ghoul, everyone!!

Slasher Honey Takes on Female Killers!

Published January 9, 2015 by biggayhorrorfan

With Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death, dominated by a very vengeance minded female spirit, in theaters this week, it seems like the perfect time to pay tribute to an article on one of my favorite sites, The Horror Honeys.

In this piece, Chassity, the Slasher Honey, explores the female killers that have populated our horror films. With fun loving intelligence, she documents their awesomeness while admitting that the genre still has a long way to go before truly balancing out the power between the sexes.

Wow. So, apparently this is an Irish leaflet against gay marriage.

Catchy. But rather sick (on so many levels). Is it just me or does the way that they state this imply that they think it is okay for children to listen to hetrosexual copulating?!

Got me a copy editor – stat!!!

Hell of a Gal: Have A Good Funeral, My Friend…Sartana Will Pay

Published December 31, 2014 by biggayhorrorfan

Helga 1
Hell of a Gal explores the many genre credits of divine Euro princess Helga Liné.

“Why can’t you behave?” – Kiss Me Kate

I guess the excuse that “she’s drawn that way” could apply to the film career of Helga Liné, as well. With her bright red hair and womanly figure, this versatile goddess, who began her career as an acrobat, was often cast as characters that grew in a conflicted light.funeral

Even in goofy 1970 Italian western Have a Good Funeral, My Friend…Sartana Will Pay (now say that 10x, quickly) Line’s Saloon Girl Mary aligns herself with the bad guys. Not required to do much more than spy on Daniela Giordano’s sweet Abigail Benson, Liné is still one of this goofy shoot ‘em up’s brightest presences. She applies a light, almost comic touch to her dealings with both Sartana (an easygoing Gianni Garko) and Benson. Meanwhile, a more sinister bent comes out when Mary deals with her partners, a crooked banker and a cow towed sheriff. More than anything, though, Liné simply looks like she is having a good time, here.

Audiences should, as well. As the hero, Sartana manipulates the wrongdoers with joking finesse. He, also, as the title suggests, pays for the burials of those who wind up on the wrong end of his gun. Throw in a bit of kung-fu action, a few bumbling sidekicks, some amusing (almost motivation-less) twists and a decent, oats-ridden timewaster is to be had.
