Review: Scum

Published June 27, 2014 by biggayhorrorfan

scum
After working all day at Big Bo’s Big Body Parts Shack, I often feel particularly filthy.

My outsides could never look as corrupted as the insides of the lead character in Zach Schildwachter’s potent short, Scum, though. Utilizing testimonials from real life serial killers to populate his killer’s thoughts, Shildwachter creates a very potent, nearly poetic examination here.

Nice editing, solid performances and a sure sense of filmic purpose mark Scum as a vital calling card, making viewers eager for more fine, independent horror from the shores of Ohio, where this mini-opus was filmed.

Review: Hell (Naked Hobo Productions)

“Lakes of fire just don’t grow on trees!” – Devil, Hell

Short and sassy – that’s how I like my gym teachers and my horror shorts.

Thankfully, ambitious Naked Hobo Productions (based in ever-loving WI) has given us a sharp, quick take on terror comedy with their fun Hell.

Here, the wrongdoing Mr. John Jacobs (a fine Mark Wooldrage) finds that the wicked underworld looks much like Earth and that his options for eternity come with a bizarre twist.

Filled with nice pacing and set-ups (courtesy of director Glenn R. Buettner) and some extraordinarily vibrant photography (courtesy of Dave Garacci), this piece also contains confident performances from all involved (especially in Buettner’s low-key, totally charming Irish accented Devil) making it a truly engaging way to spend 9 (or so) minutes.

Be sure to keep up with all the fiery happenings of Naked Hobo Productions at https://twitter.com/Nakedhobo. Meanwhile, the official page for Hell is https://www.facebook.com/Hellshortfilm.

ShaLenn Madness!

So, I had this uptight designer make me a baseball cap consisting of nothing but ice. I was just trying to be as cool as some of these awesome independent exploitation directors that I know. It didn’t work. Still, my consolation prize is that I can promote these spine tingling ladies and gents until time freezes over or my bloodstained weave falls out. Here goes…

Cory J. Udler, founder of ShaLenn Productions and that awesome king of Wisconsin filmic craziness, is at it again! His brilliant freak-out on American values and small town perversion, Mediatrix, is now available on VHS (see photo above).

First Day of Girl filming.

First Day of Girl filming.

And…continuing in that film’s delirious vein, he is now hard at work on his next feature, The Girl Who Played with the Dead! Featuring performances from (former) Fangoria goddess Shannon Lark and cult icon Lloyd Kaufman, this epic is sure to push all of Middle America’s (way too) fuzzy buttons.

You can keep track of Girl at:

…and purchase Mediatrix at http://www.incestdeathsquad.com.

In a parallel universe, this HAS to be the perfect couple: director Cory J Udler and BGHF!

The Bloody Wonderful Fies Sisters!

Oh, I have tried to be cool. A lot. Sometimes, I succeed. Other times…

But some folks are just naturally cool. Take the amazing Fies sister, for example. The primary forces behind the (unfortunately) short lived BleedFest, a monthly West Coast event honoring femme based contributions to exploitation filmmaking, these two are truly exciting creative voices.

communeBrenda has produced many a vibrant short while Elisabeth wrote and directed 2009’s award winning The Commune, a mysterious shocker with 70s undertones.

Now, you can keep up with everything these two are doing by following their adventures, here:

Music to Make Horror Movies By: “Bikini Gorilla”, Tonjia Atomic

Published March 2, 2014 by biggayhorrorfan

Growing up in Amish country in the hills of Western New York, I witnessed visual miracles. Why, I will never forget the day I stumbled over a snake…draped in a suit or sang a duet with a dewy eyed cow…that just happened to be wearing a pink thong.

But I have never felt such life changing brilliance as I have watching the totally talented; truly divine Tonjia Atomic sing about a gorilla in a bikini! With dusky soulfulness (and a sense of true fun), Atomic (fronting her band Filthy Issue) delivers the goods on this title track to (the awesome) Andrew Shearer’s upcoming film.

Review: The Trouble with Barry

Published November 15, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

barry
Sometimes I wonder how I would have turned out if I hadn’t been kidnapped as a toddler and eventually raised by a group of psychotic prostitute lesbian nuns. Why, I might even like romantic comedies, now, which truly would be a horror.

In tandem, egotistical, drug addled, former child star Barry begins to wonder if maybe his upbringing might have something to do with the unparalleled mess that qualifies as his current life in the fun, upcoming horror-comedy The Trouble with Barry. Forced to crash with an old boyfriend, Barry takes a supporting role in a fledgling web-series to stay in the public’s eye and, hopeful, revive his career. But someone keeps murdering Barry’s co-stars and when he isn’t too busy being considered a suspect, Barry may find that he is next on the heinous killer’s list.
016
Directed by Mike Justice and Stephan Kitaen, who also co-scripted with Sean Singletary, Barry is a ravenously fun look at the desperate, self centered personalities that populate Hollywood. Terror lovers should especially appreciate the trio’s take on Asia Argento and an appearance from scream queen legends Brinke Stevens, Linnea Quigley and Michelle Bauer is a welcome treat, as well. The trio looks fabulous and they deliver their enjoyable dialogue with aplomb! Further ghoulish points are gained by the presence of terror icon Lynn Lowry as Barry’s notoriously nasty mother. Lowry delivers with multi-leveled delight, bringing all her (award winning) stage skills to the fore. She is truly a force of nature, here, proving, once and for all, that she is one of the classic buried treasures of the entertainment industry, as whole. 005

As for Barry, himself, Peter Stickles (well known for his romps in such creep-tastic projects as Cemetery Gates, The Lair and Evil Bong 3D) provides an enthusiastic, acidically humorous insight into the world of such tragic teen figures as Leif Garrett and Corey Haim. Stickles is most impressive, though, when he lets a little sensitivity shine through as Barry, confusedly, begins to feel affection for the director of his web-series (nicely played by Eric Dean).

In fact, while this project is full of sharp one-liners and classic gags (including a brilliant sequence wherein a militant feminist presents ultra-gay Barry with a poem entitled “Pussy”) throughout its running time, it could have benefited from just a tiny bit more of the closing act identification provided by Stickles. The well drawn characters are such thoroughly harsh indictments of Los Angeles style solipsism that they are hard to connect with on a compassionate level.

Still, that is a small criticism for such a professionally accomplished and creative project (and one that, also, contains a brilliant kill scene, taking place in a gym’s lobby).

Review: Profile of a Killer

Published November 9, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

profileofakiller2
How I still shudder when I remember the days I spent as a captive of the Perpetual Lords of Homogenized Mediocrity! I never want to see another episode of Friends again!!!

Saul, the serial killer profiler at the heart of director-writer Caspian Tredwell-Owen’s darkly entertaining Profile of a Killer (2012), knows exactly how I feel. Called in to help an old friend crack a puzzling rash of local murders, Saul soon finds himself kidnapped and at the mercy of the very killer that he is trying to identify.

That David, the vicious murderer, is a troubled teen brings out both Saul’s horrified decency and his fathering instincts. While Rachel, a determined agent with secrets of her own, races to find Saul, the cracks in David’s armor begin to show. Abandoning his methodical methods, David begins lashing out with youthful rage – and Saul may eventually pay the ultimate price.

As the piece’s imaginative creator, Treadwell-Owen definitely embraces the bloodthirstiness of the tale. A sequence involving a young prostitute, in particular, is ruthlessly chilling. But, he, wisely, makes Profile of a Killer a character driven piece – even eking out some audience sympathy for the obviously confused, occasionally child-like David. In particular, he gives the kind Saul and the conflicted Rachel powerful backstories that engage the viewer and make the duo’s deadly conflicts all the more intriguing.

Indeed, those who relish in the limb spewing antics of CSI and Criminal Minds will find much to enjoy, here, especially in the well crafted, naturally believable performances of Gabriele Angieri (Saul), Joey Pollari (David) and Emily Franderburgh (Rachel).

Jason Coffman’s Still

Published October 25, 2013 by biggayhorrorfan

still
Granted, I am blind to a lot of stuff – including criticism. (Although, I did get it, recently, when one online commentator called me a “dork” and another called me the “worst interviewer ever” re: my Danielle Harris video interview! Y–OUCH!!!)

But, the heroine of Jason Coffman’s latest thriller Still has got it really bad. After an attack, she discovers she is suffering from a rare condition called akinetopsia, or motion blindness. The complications from that are sure to be riskily adventurous as described in Coffman’s passionate Kickstarter campaign.

Coffman whom has already graced the independent cinematic landscape with such (shorter) offerings as Tape and The Gamma-Ray Man is sure to use every cent generated to create something truly unique and enjoyable.

Now, That’s One Bloody Sacrament!

Oh, the lesbian prostitute nuns who raised me might not like this at all! But, as we live to defy our parents, I have to give full props to director-writer Shawn Ewert and his latest film Sacrament.

sacrament3
Sacrament, which exploits its hick horror vibe to maximum potential by featuring Texas Chainsaw Massacre veterans Marilyn Burns and Ed Guinn, concerns a gay couple and their friends whom encounter a group of backwoods, murderous religious freaks. Add a tagline stating “Sinners 4 Dinner” to the mix and this project ends up sounding like a delicious dose of independent horror, no?
