Music to Make Horror Movies By: Leif Garrett

He spent more time with a staple in his belly, as a teen centerfold pin-up, than your ever average Playboy bunny. More importantly here, Leif Garrett, that prime representative of androgynous, messy blonde boyhood, also graced such horror epics as Devil Times Five, Cheerleader Camp, Party Line and The Whispering, throughout his decade’s long acting career. deviltimesfive

He was also, as so many male idols before and after him, a pop star of questionable yet, temporarily successful, note. Although, his vocals were often more layered than a Patti Page novelty number, his recordings are so fun and indicative of a certain era that they are, perhaps, enjoyable for reasons beyond nostalgia.

Indeed, his biggest hit, I Was Made for Dancing, is propulsively catchy and the video below shows he can wear a pair of black stretch pants like nobody’s business, surprising no one, that he effectively enacted drag scenes, not only as a child in Devil Times Five, but as an adult in Party Line, as well.

The Backside of Horror: Taylor Lacher, “Devil Times Five” (1974)

Let’s face it, half the fun of horror and exploitation is seeing some hot bodies frolicking around in the buff. And while I worship the female form, I believe exploitation definitely veers into the exploitive when only gorgeous women are on display while their male counterparts remain chastely buttoned up. Therefore, The Backside of Horror salutes the filmmakers and actors whom even up the score a bit by showing us instances of hot and juicy male flesh in their bloody celluloid fantasies.

geneSome guys don’t get a break. Even though beefy Rick (played by 70s television perennial Taylor Lacher) turns down the advances of the saucy Lovely (Carolyn Stellar) in the twisted 70s drive-in feature Devil Times Five, he still gets whacked by a group of sadistic children.

Maybe that’s because he does give us a view of his meaty man-globes – another terror film no-no!gene half butt

In an interesting side-note, Stellar is the mother of (future teen idol) Leif Garrett and (My Three Son‘s cutie) Dawn Lyn who play two of the unrepentant tots who eviscerate a house full of whining, drinking, back-stabbing adults in this truly trashy, semi-classic.
