Music to Make Horror Movies By: Carol Douglas

Published February 14, 2021 by biggayhorrorfan

With her take on Doctor’s Orders, the well-rounded Carol Douglas found herself swimming through the upper echelons of disco ballrooms, worldwide. The popularity of that song earned her a special mention in the background of Saturday Night Fever, but her preceding stints on television shows like The Patty Duke Show and several appearances in off-Broadway productions already proved she was a talent to be reckoned with.

Nicely, one of her more interesting assignments during her ‘70s heyday was providing the dance tune for the truly eclectic soundtrack of Haunted, a dusty look at the revenge that a ghost of a Civil War witch takes on the ancestors of those who murdered her.

Like the film itself, which mixed such Hollywood notables as Virginia Mayo co-starring with such newcomers as Playboy model Ann Michelle, the music here features dramatic story songs like Billy Vera’s Indian Woman, Freya Cayne’s gooey love ballad A Distant Time and Douglas’ exuberant vocalizing on the club ready You Make Me Feel the Music.

Thankfully, for all fans of that Summers’ Era of Boogying, Douglas is still making those bright lights shine positively at Carol Douglas | Facebook.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Cynthia Johnson and Ma

Cynthia Johnson Octavia Spencer

Octavia Spencer commands the outrageous horror fest Ma…and she gives upmost respect to an under sung diva of dance music in one fantastic sequence. With enthusiasm, Spencer accentuates a scene where the classic dance track Funky Town, performed by Lipps Inc, is playing.

While that song is practically legendary, the magnetic Cynthia Johnson, who sang the lead on all of the band’s songs on their first three recordings, is not nearly as visually present in people’s minds. Hopefully, Johnson, who has continued to perform as a vocalist and instrumentalist over the years, will be given renewed interest as Ma continues to dominate viewers with its sassy thrills.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Linda Clifford

Her original goal to be an actress landed her background work in Roman Polanski’s classic Rosemary’s Baby and the Tony Curtis thriller The Boston Strangler. But Linda Clifford really hit her mark as the singer who introduced such popular dance singles as Red Light and If My Friends Could See Me Now.

My Heart’s On Fire, her last full length LP, contained the devilish You Bring Out the Heat in Me, proving that her renowned vocals truly contained a touch of authentic fire.

Nicely, Clifford is currently spreading the warmth at www.thelindaclifford.com.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: The Weather Girls

Published July 15, 2018 by biggayhorrorfan

The Weather Girls

The sassy novelty of The Weather Girls’ huge hit It’s Raining Men has found it a placement in such disparate films as Easy Money, Eraser, Stuck on You and Vampires Suck.

But the unstoppable team of Izora Armstead and Martha Wash knew their way around songs of every distinction. For instance, Big Girls Don’t Cry, their second album, found them doing a variety of covers – one of the more anthemic being their powerful take on John Fogerty’s Down on the Corner.

Currently, Wash still has a deserved place in the public eye, but the unfortunate passing of Armstead in 2004 means we will never see these two multi-talented performers reunite. Still, their work, from their early days backing up disco icon Sylvester to their own lauded output, will live on forever in the hearts of their fans and those who, thankfully, are still discovering them anew.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Evelyn “Champagne” King

She was the Queen of Shame, due to her propulsive disco hit of the same name, but the glorious Evelyn “Champagne” King also deserves credit for being a seminal horror movie soundtrack diva. Her seductive Give It Up highlighted the dance floor seduction scene between Chris Sarandon’s commanding Jerry Dandridge and Amanda Bearse’s awkward Amy Peterson in 1985’s beloved Fright Night.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Leif Garrett

He spent more time with a staple in his belly, as a teen centerfold pin-up, than your ever average Playboy bunny. More importantly here, Leif Garrett, that prime representative of androgynous, messy blonde boyhood, also graced such horror epics as Devil Times Five, Cheerleader Camp, Party Line and The Whispering, throughout his decade’s long acting career. deviltimesfive

He was also, as so many male idols before and after him, a pop star of questionable yet, temporarily successful, note. Although, his vocals were often more layered than a Patti Page novelty number, his recordings are so fun and indicative of a certain era that they are, perhaps, enjoyable for reasons beyond nostalgia.

Indeed, his biggest hit, I Was Made for Dancing, is propulsively catchy and the video below shows he can wear a pair of black stretch pants like nobody’s business, surprising no one, that he effectively enacted drag scenes, not only as a child in Devil Times Five, but as an adult in Party Line, as well.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Killer Fish/Amii Stewart

1979’s Killer Fish was part heist flick, part disaster epic and part nature gone wild horror flick. Perhaps fortunately, The Winner Takes it All, the film’s end credit theme song, performed by the glorious Amii Stewart, is all disco, though.

Stewart, best known for her outrageous costumes (as witnessed above) and a popular (late ’70s) cover of ‘60s hit Knock on Wood, has also released an album featuring composer Ennio Morricone’s best known songs, which should further endear her to Euro exploitation buffs.killer fish

The gloriously bad Killer Fish, meanwhile, was recently released on Blu-Ray by ITV Studios and Scorpion Releasing after years of VHS obscurity.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Don’t Go in the House

Chick-en on a stick!!! One of the most notorious horror shockers of the 70s, the grim Don’t Go in the House is best remembered for director Joseph Ellison’s execution of the (very real to life) barbequing of one of the disturbed lead’s victims.

Thankfully for viewers, during the thick of the proceedings, Dan Grimaldi’s sensitively portrayed Donny took a break from his fiery missionary work to attend a nightclub. Of course, as the film’s eagle eyed followers ascertained, that visit didn’t turn out so well for yet another female companion…but it did provide some relieved patrons with this delicious slice of disco fever and the movie with its very appropriate, unofficial theme song!

Yes, lovers of terror and hoarders of fright, it’s time to go L’Ectrique and get Struck by Boogie Lightning!
