Music to Make Horror Movies By: Atanas Ilitch

As the Driller Killer in Slumber Party Massacre 2, Atanas Ilitch made a definitive impression on slasher movie lovers worldwide. Radiating with hip James Dean swerve and a sense of New Wave cool, Ilitch made killing seem as quick and easy as a cheesy pop song here.

But Ilitch’s personal history is even more colorful than his best known onscreen role. The scion of a powerful Detroit based business dynasty, he was also reportedly considered for the role of James Bond in the ‘80s. His musicality was a prime consideration to the producers and, in preparation for playing the iconic spy, he recorded a number of songs with espionage style theatrics. Upon losing the role to Timothy Dalton, he took such imaginings as Dark Night, Crazy in the Dark and Shoot the Gun and put them on an album called Shadows. Let’s Live Together was one of the more romantic offerings on display there.

Surviving a battle with cancer in his early 40s, Ilitch is, assumedly, still providing the citizens of Michigan with interesting musical avenues via his various corporate undertakings.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Cynthia Johnson and Ma

Published June 16, 2019 by biggayhorrorfan

Cynthia Johnson Octavia Spencer

Octavia Spencer commands the outrageous horror fest Ma…and she gives upmost respect to an under sung diva of dance music in one fantastic sequence. With enthusiasm, Spencer accentuates a scene where the classic dance track Funky Town, performed by Lipps Inc, is playing.

While that song is practically legendary, the magnetic Cynthia Johnson, who sang the lead on all of the band’s songs on their first three recordings, is not nearly as visually present in people’s minds. Hopefully, Johnson, who has continued to perform as a vocalist and instrumentalist over the years, will be given renewed interest as Ma continues to dominate viewers with its sassy thrills.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: FEE LION

Blood Sisters, FEE LION’s latest EP, vibrates with impulses of dark murder, underscored by a true sense of female empowerment. But, as evidenced by On Me, one of her most successful singles, she has long been playing with a smart balance between the creepy under life and the brighter hotspots of the dance floor.

Nicely, we recently talked with FEE about her inspirations – Dario Argento and Drag Race, anyone?!? – during a particularly honest episode of Dagger Cast. I was beyond thrilled. Give it a listen and you will be, too.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Linda Clifford

Her original goal to be an actress landed her background work in Roman Polanski’s classic Rosemary’s Baby and the Tony Curtis thriller The Boston Strangler. But Linda Clifford really hit her mark as the singer who introduced such popular dance singles as Red Light and If My Friends Could See Me Now.

My Heart’s On Fire, her last full length LP, contained the devilish You Bring Out the Heat in Me, proving that her renowned vocals truly contained a touch of authentic fire.

Nicely, Clifford is currently spreading the warmth at www.thelindaclifford.com.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Adele Bertei

She’s my favorite eclectic monstress, her work pitching from No Wave aggression to pop smoothness and back again. Her collaborators, ranging from the queenly Nona Hendryx to the sci-fi flecked Thomas Dolby, have also expanded her artistic reach, making Adele Bertei one of the most interesting figures in the ‘80s cultural landscape and beyond.

Not only has her art celebrated queer feministic contexts, but Little Lives, Big Love, the single from her unjustly underappreciated solo album on Chrysalis, also sent out a strong anti-apartheid message.

Thankfully, Bertei, who is also a writer and filmmaker, is still creating vast, rich cultural landscapes at https://www.adelebertei.com/ and https://www.facebook.com/AdeleBertei/.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Toto Coelo

Published December 10, 2017 by biggayhorrorfan

Toto Coelo Man o War.jpg

While it seemed like artists like Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne and Gary Numan covered all the bases on horror and science fiction themes in recording during the ‘80s, a close look at Man o’ War, the single album release from the colorful Toto Coelo, proves that there was another vibrant, less appreciated force at work.

Decorated with a sense of neon fun, this group’s biggest hit I Eat Cannibals is included here along with numbers such as (I May Commit) the Perfect Crime, the title track, Spy Vs. Spy and the stylish, dance influenced Dracula’s Tango (I’m a Sucker for Your Love). One just has to say “fangs” for a title like that, right?!?

Unable to replicate the success of Cannibals, and perhaps disappointed about the non-release of the horror sequel Grizzly 2 (In which they appeared in concert footage), the group disbanded in 1985. But lucky bargain bin hunters know that the electric joy and goofy gothic charms of Toto Coelo will never truly fade. Now, if only the folks at Stranger Things would take notice…

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Fergie

“Like a barnacle they stick to me, like a zombie’s teeth in my flesh…”

As Tammy in Planet Terror, the multi-hyphenate Fergie unsuccessfully dealt with some vicious undead trauma. But in real life, this wise woman knows that the true emotional horror comes from a relationship gone cold.

Nicely, the video for Save It Til Morning, off of Double Duchess, her latest release, also prominently features handsome actor Jay Hernandez, known not only for his work in my deepest fantasies, but in the Hostel series, as well.

Of course, you can get in touch with this gorgeous songstress anytime of the day at www.fergie.com or https://www.facebook.com/fergie.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Eva Everything

eva everything

Independent and adventurous, Canadian singer Eva Everything produced an album, an E.P. and a handful of eclectic music videos in the ’80s, all decorated with a groovy, DIY vibe.

This energy led to the inclusion of No Pleasure, perhaps her most popular song, in Tibor Takacs’ mini-monster, home invasion fest The Gate.

Meanwhile, her video for that song’s companion piece, Painless, rings with comedy, truth and entrepreneurship. Everyone here worked on a volunteer basis.
