Blood Sisters, FEE LION’s latest EP, vibrates with impulses of dark murder, underscored by a true sense of female empowerment. But, as evidenced by On Me, one of her most successful singles, she has long been playing with a smart balance between the creepy under life and the brighter hotspots of the dance floor.

Nicely, we recently talked with FEE about her inspirations – Dario Argento and Drag Race, anyone?!? – during a particularly honest episode of Dagger Cast. I was beyond thrilled. Give it a listen and you will be, too.

ginger rogers 13th guest

I don’t know about you, but I believe that everything is just a little bit better with a bit of Ginger sprinkled on it. Of course, in this case, I refer to the glorious Ginger Rogers. This Academy Award winning actress is probably best known for the multiple dance epics that she made with the elegant Fred Astaire. But, ever filled with an eclectic energy, this perky powerhouse actually began her career appearing in a couple of Gothic mystery-thrillers.

thirteenth_guestThe Thirteenth Guest and A Shriek in the Night feature the typical, gutsy work that was the Rogers’ trademark, but as she croons below, follow-up appearances in the terror genre were obviously just not for her!

fred astaire

The essence of cool suave in an every man’s persona, Fred Astaire lit up dozens of enjoyable musicals for a stretch of over twenty years.

His final role in the film adaptation of Peter Straub’s powerful Ghost Story, meanwhile, saw him adding a nice helping of contemplative sorrow to the spooky proceedings.

Of course, this celluloid ease was put to grand display in The Gay Divorcee, one of the classics that he made with Ginger Rogers, his most notable dancing partner. Cole Porter’s Night and Day may have been sung better by others, but it never looked more grandly elegant.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Toto Coelo

Toto Coelo Man o War.jpg

While it seemed like artists like Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne and Gary Numan covered all the bases on horror and science fiction themes in recording during the ‘80s, a close look at Man o’ War, the single album release from the colorful Toto Coelo, proves that there was another vibrant, less appreciated force at work.

Decorated with a sense of neon fun, this group’s biggest hit I Eat Cannibals is included here along with numbers such as (I May Commit) the Perfect Crime, the title track, Spy Vs. Spy and the stylish, dance influenced Dracula’s Tango (I’m a Sucker for Your Love). One just has to say “fangs” for a title like that, right?!?

Unable to replicate the success of Cannibals, and perhaps disappointed about the non-release of the horror sequel Grizzly 2 (In which they appeared in concert footage), the group disbanded in 1985. But lucky bargain bin hunters know that the electric joy and goofy gothic charms of Toto Coelo will never truly fade. Now, if only the folks at Stranger Things would take notice…

“Like a barnacle they stick to me, like a zombie’s teeth in my flesh…”

As Tammy in Planet Terror, the multi-hyphenate Fergie unsuccessfully dealt with some vicious undead trauma. But in real life, this wise woman knows that the true emotional horror comes from a relationship gone cold.

Nicely, the video for Save It Til Morning, off of Double Duchess, her latest release, also prominently features handsome actor Jay Hernandez, known not only for his work in my deepest fantasies, but in the Hostel series, as well.

Of course, you can get in touch with this gorgeous songstress anytime of the day at www.fergie.com or https://www.facebook.com/fergie.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Josie Cotton

Johnny Are You Queer? put her on her on the map, but the fabulous Josie Cotton actually released a couple of albums in the ’80s, chock full of gorgeous New Wave tunes, that were worthy of equal attention. Nicely, she also applied a distinctly creepy vibe as she and Adam Ant stalked Pierce Brosnan and Lesley-Anne Down throughout the LA underground in the dreamy horror flick Nomads.

Interestingly, in her own right, Cotton is a lover of B-Movies and odd cinema. Thus her 2007 recording Invasion of the B-Girls, containing the theme songs to various drive-in classics, was born.

Here, though, she supplies a spooky carnival vibe, years before Ryan Murphy went there with American Horror Story, with the video to Jimmy Loves Maryann. It’s a highlight from 1984’s From the Hip, her excellent second album.
