One of the first to earn a star on the Hollywood Walk Fame, the dazzling Virginia Mayo added gleeful zest to such projects as White Heat, (the award winning) The Best Years of Our Lives and (the truly fun) She’s Working Her Way Through College. Her finely tuned acting antics also found spooky purchase in a diverse array of macabre settings. Her performances in Castle of Evil, Haunted, Evil Spirits and an episode of Night Gallery understandably brought her great acclaim.

Some lucky appreciators also got a chance to see her perform onstage in such shows as No, No Nanette, Good News and, perhaps most importantly, Stephen Sondheim’s Follies.

The Follies clip is especially notable as it gives people a chance to actually hear Mayo’s singing voice. While her characters often silkily warbled tunes in her movies, she was almost always dubbed, allowing people to concentrate fully on her smooth dance moves as opposed to favoring her dulcet tones.

Mayo, who died at the age of 84 in 2005, also made appearances in such cult films as Midnight Witness, the notorious Won Ton Ton: The Dog Who Saved Hollywood, and The Silver Chalice, which featured an oft-robed Paul Newman in his first major role.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Yvonne DeCarlo

Her beauty brought Howard Duff to his knees in 1947’s Brute Force, but Yvonne De Carlo is probably best known to the latch key generation as the gloriously fun Lily Munster. Besides The Munsters, fans of freewheeling  horror fare are most likely familiar with her dedicated performances in such late night cable favorites as Cellar Dweller, Play Dead, American Gothic, Satan’s Cheerleaders and Silent Scream.

Her multiple talents extended far beyond genre territory, though. An acclaimed singer, she won praise for her performance in Stephen Sondheim’s Follies in the ‘80s. As the clip below reveals, she was also a vibrant guest on television talk shows and variety specials, as well.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Lee Remick

Richard Burton threatened her with The Medusa Touch and little Damian broke her body (and her heart) in The Omen. But the scrumptious Lee Remick did have some heroes in her life, as well.

Surprisingly, famed composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim was one of them. Remick appeared in the original Broadway production of Sondheim’s well regarded (yet short lived) Anyone Can Whistle and she also glammed it up in an all star production of his Follies in the ‘80s.

Here, with direct forcefulness, she takes on the bad guys in her own way with There Won’t Be Trumpets, one of her best remembered numbers from Whistle.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Alexis Smith

Not many can say that they were romanced by Humphrey Bogart and killed by Jodie Foster, but the classically beautiful, smoky voiced Alexis Smith can wear both of those cinematic crowns with pride.  As the proud Cecily Latham in The Two Mrs. Carrolls and the even prouder Mrs. Hallett in The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane, she truly helped create celluloid magic.

And while her death by cellar door in the twisted and macabre Little Girl is certainly memorable, fans of a certain set will surely find her take on Stephen Sondheim’s Could I Leave You from Follies much more compelling by far.
