As an actress, Haley Kiyoko excelled at providing support to the heroine of Insidious: Chapter 3. Nicely, her portrayal of the concerned Maggie in that film paved the way for an even more important show of guidance and hope. As a popular, openly gay singer-songwriter, Kiyoko has been gratefully referred to as “Lesbian Jesus” by her enthusiastic fans who appreciate the way she has brought positive focus to alternative lifestyles in her songs.

Tuesday Knight on Matlock

If music really is the food of love then Tuesday Knight is dining happy. The A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master star has released numerous recordings over the years, including her popular ANOES 4 theme song. Of course, rhythm lives in her blood. Knight’s father, Baker, was a talented songwriter whose material was covered by everyone from Paul McCartney to Frank Sinatra.

Showing familial pride, Knight covered Lonesome Town, one of her father’s most recognized tunes on The Starlet, a third season episode of the popular detective series Matlock. This fun episode, featuring such stalwarts as Roddy McDowall and Anne Francis, revolves around the murder of a conniving contestant at a beauty contest. Tuesday M1

As the perky Abby Smith, a hopeful participant, Knight radiates with sweetness in the background of several ensemble set-ups. That her cohorts here include DeepStar Six’s Nia Peeples (Fame), Rebecca Staab (the Invisible Girl in the Roger Corman produced Fantastic Four) and (long term The Young and the Restless cast member)Tonya Williams only sweetens the pot.

Nicely, she is finally given primary focus as she, lovingly, performs her father’s lyrics. It’s a brief yet potent appearance and a boon to devoted Freddy Krueger lovers everywhere.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Rosemary Clooney

An icon imbued a modern hit with a touch of class this past week when the divine Rosemary Clooney’s Magic is the Moonlight was featured in the holiday edition of The Chilling Tales of Sabrina.

Clooney, long regarded as a top notch song stylist, had one of her finest moments when she recorded Love, an album of emotional romantic fare, with Nelson Riddle, her secret paramour at the time. I Wish It So was one of the more haunting, atmospheric pieces from that collaboration.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Velvet Underground

In the ‘60s Lou Reed and crew probably didn’t know that Venus in Furs, from Velvet Underground’s debut album with Nico, would define mystery, dark horror and sexiness for every generation that followed. Case in point, the song was just used in the 7th episode of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina to highlight a moment of gothic sensuality. sabrina-1

But the band was always of their time and ahead of it, as well. 1971’s Candy Says detailed the experiences of Candy Darling, one of the first transgendered superstars, with a beautiful honesty.

Darling, who appeared in cult classics like 1972’s Silent Night , Bloody Night, has plenty of deserved online appreciation. The Velvet Underground, currently being celebrated with an art show in NYC, are always being celebrated at http://www.velvetundergroundmusic.com/, as well.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Pointer Sisters

Sibling rivalry does its thing. My sister’s love of Beauty and the Beat by The Go-Go’s meant that I was unable to truly worship at its punk-pop greatness until nostalgia hit me in my mid-40s. Meanwhile, my brother’s love of Madonna and Olivia Newton-John left their charms eternally foreign to me. Another of his favorite records, the Pointer Sisters’ Contact, also came under my powers of derision. But a recent pick-up from a dollar bin has uncovered its darker, smoky charms to me. The popular Dare Me, for example, seems like the perfect background music to the violent cat and mouse face-offs that exist between such supernatural slasher icons as Freddy and Jason and their (often ingeniously) wily targets, Nancy Thompson and Laurie Strode.

Thankfully, The Pointer Sisters are still spreading their rich magic – one of their songs was even used on Ryan Murphy’s short lived Scream Queens – and showing the world how their blend of pop, rock, soul and (even) country music made them one of the world’s truly under-sung super groups. Melba Moore on Monsters

Even Tony winners can be tempted. Just ask the radiant Melba Moore! In The Mandrake Root episode of Monsters, this multi-faceted performer found herself compromised by a sexy plant man and her life – or at least that of her character’s – was never quite the same again.

The plotline here finds Moore, as the demure Angela Lyle, clearing out the remains of her mysterious grandmother’s estate. The discovery of a dusty box leads to the emergence of a mysterious plant. Said vine, due to Lyle’s curious tinkering, naturally grows into something tall, handsome, smooth…and full of bloodlust. 

Melba monsters 3Nicely, as an actress, Moore simply navigates her character’s growth from timid to uncontrollably lustful. There is no grand posing, but you truly believe that she has fallen under her supernatural partner’s spell. Meanwhile, Byron Minns, as the vein strewn reason for Moore’s down fall, makes one understand why she would tumble down this murderous rabbit hole, head first.

Accentuated by the series’ unusual twists and turns, this episode ultimately provides something for both enthusiastic show tune lovers and terror anthology buffs alike.

Tuesday Knight on The X-Files

She is known for incisively combining fear with strength as the damaged Kristen in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. Nicely, the truly talented Tuesday Knight brought many of those same qualities to the 6th season Trevor episode of The X-Files. Tuesday 2

Here, as the concerned Jackie Gurwitch, Knight enters familiar territory: fighting back against a psychopath. The villain in question this time around is the maniacal Wilson Rawls, played with insane glee by the accomplished John Diehl. Of course, just like Freddy, Rawls has special powers. He can alter his body chemistry to absorb bullets and walk through walls. This latter trick almost does in Knight’s Gurwitch, but our favored actress, thankfully, remains strong and lives to tell the tale after the insidious attack.

Radiating with fear and determination, Knight registers with impact here. She also gives Gurwitch a hint of trailer park defiance – a decided detour from the middle class background of Kristen – proving what an eclectic performer she can be in the process.

From the gilded Broadway stages to poverty row, the luminescent Melba Moore has seen it all. Her appearances in Def By Temptation and The Mandrake Root episode of Monsters also prove that she likes to put a little fear into the hearts of her devoted fans.

Further showing her eclectic nature, Moore, known for the fluidity of her rhythm and blues crooning, was nominated for a Grammy for Best Female Rock Performance for her sexy take on Read My Lips, the title track of her successful 1985 album.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Goldie Hawn and Liza Minnelli

Just like me, Goldie Hawn and Liza Minnelli have never quite made the curve. While my lack is probably imaginary and (possibly) self-inflicted, the only way Hawn and Minnelli didn’t quite got into the groove was with their horror credits.

But…Hawn did face down the terrors of an abusive ex in the 1991 thriller Deceived and is an integral part of the catty craziness of Death Becomes Her, a much loved take on body modification (that has many campy elements of terror). Minnelli, meanwhile, has provided gothic back-up vocals for both Alice Cooper and My Chemical Romance…earning her place in the hearts of everyone on eyeliner spectrum – from drag to punk rock.

In 1980 these two icons joined forces for Goldie and Liza Together… a truly colorful television special, indicative not only of the era but of the incredible talents involved.

The show aired twice, to less than stellar ratings, but it will forever remain a favorite to those who actually experienced in all of its initial flaming glory.

But the magnificent Ariana Grande, whose dream role just happens to be Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, instinctively knows how to keep rising above. …Or majestically sinking below as this delightfully Alice in Wonderland inspired video for No Tears Left to Cry so artistically proves.
