Here’s a reason to bloody celebrate.

Jason Sharman’s gay themed horror short Happy Birthday Chad has been dominating the festival circuit! It even won the Best Emerging Canadian Artist award at 2013’s Inside Out Fest.

That sounds like more than enough reason to join the cake blasting fun at http://www.facebook.com/happybirthdaychad to me!

…and if there is room for a sequel, Jason, may I suggest Happy Birthday Brian (Who is a Big Gay Horror Fan) as a follow-up title? 🙂

No? Ah, well….until the next time – SWEET love and pink GRUE, Big Gay Horror Fan!

Zombinatrix

Sometimes a name just says it all.

Such is the case with Zombinatrix, the new horror-comedy being put together by indie horror princess Bianca Allaine (Albino Farm, Web of Deceit, Watch These Films with Bianca Allaine) and writer-director Michael Kyne.

That name (and the saucy tag line) causes one to, brilliantly, imagine the multiple delights that this film will, hopefully, have to offer.

So, be sure to keep up with all of the whip bearing, leather clad undeadness at

Kelli Maroney in Gila!

Published July 21, 2015 by biggayhorrorfan

Leaping lizards! Known for her sassy portrayals in such cult classics as Night of the Comet, Chopping Mall and Zero Boys, genre goddess Kelli Maroney was, smartly, hired by director (and frequent collaborator) Jim Wynorski to appear in 2012’s low budget, truly fun Gila!, a film that chronicles the mass destruction that occurs when a green scaled monster goes on a rampage, during the holiday season, in a small town.

A revamp of the 1959 drive-in staple The Giant Gila Monster, Gila!, which recently screened at G-FEST 2015 in Chicago, is filmed with boundless enthusiasm by Wynorski, who, seemingly, adores the source material.

Thankfully, on what was surely a quick shoot, Wynorski is aided here by such performing veterans as Maroney, Don Sullivan (the original film’s lead), Julie McCullough and Terence Knox.

Maroney, naturally, shines the brightest, giving her Officer Wilma a charm and saucy outlook that radiates on-screen. Whether sweetly defying Knox’s Sherriff, flirting with the handsome male lead or (spoiler alert) meeting her demise in a very tongue and cheek way, Maroney is a scene stealer.

But, no surprise there, right?

Christopher Lee Tribute

Terror in the Aisles’ latest event is a Christopher Lee tribute and will feature screenings of Death Line (Raw Meat), The Wicker Man and The Horror of Dracula.

Of course, what makes this particular evening even cooler is the participation of Death Line director Gary Sherman. The personable Sherman is one of the greatest cult film directors of the 80s with such credits as Dead and Buried, Vice Squad, Wanted: Dead or Alive, Poltergeist III and (the seriously underrated) Lisa under his blood stained celluloid belt.

The event, which also features the debut screenings of various shorts and trailers, takes place in Chicago on Saturday, July 25th.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Brenda Lee

In my opinion, if you going to get stalked down by a heavy breathing psycho on wheels then there is no one better to have on your (trying to) getaway vehicle’s radio than vibrant, dusty voiced Brenda Lee.

Apparently, the producers of 2001 thriller Joy Ride agree with me. They featured two songs from Lee on the soundtrack to that truck stop inducing terror ride.

Here’s one of ‘em. Roll the windows down and enjoy!

Horror, She Wrote: Lee Meriwether and Michelle Johnson

Horror, She Wrote explores the episodes of the ever-popular detective series Murder, She Wrote, featuring Angela Lansbury’s unstoppable Jessica Fletcher, that were highlighted by performances from genre film actors.

Of all the things that an excess of television viewing can tell you, to never get on a ship with Lee Meriwether may be the most important! Lee 1

A co-starring role in the 1978 television film Cruise into Terror found the luscious, amber waved Meriwether seduced by a devilish sarcophagus. Her 1993 appearance on the Ship of Thieves episode of Murder, She Wrote, meanwhile, allowed her to indulge in even deadlier circumstances. As the sophisticated Leslie Hunter, Jessica’s old college pal, Meriwether appears to be aglow with love for the captain of a soon to be retired ship. But the closing circumstances reveal very sinister edges to Hunter’s character, facets that Meriwether embraces with clipped intensity.

Lee2Nicely, on this voyage, Meriwether is joined in mercenary activity by the equally stunning Michelle Johnson (Waxwork, Dr. Giggles, Blood Ties, Werewolf). Johnson provides smoothly evil emoting, as well, making this particular outing a delicious excursion for those who like their femmes with a dubious edge.

I’ve been thinking about summoning up something to get rid of those extra pounds I gained after my forced imprisonment in Miss Monster Face’s High Caloric Pre-Summer Daycare. But, after watching the trailer to Red Men Films’ All Above Board, I am afraid of what I might really conjure up.

Shot and edited in 13 days, this film looks like it will give rampant Ouija using a bad – and deliciously bloody – name.

Late to the SCOTUS Party!

Published June 27, 2015 by biggayhorrorfan

equality
I have to admit that I came late to the marriage equality party. I reluctantly attended rallies for the issue, over the years, and did so more because I felt everyone should have the right to do what they wanted and not over some passionate belief in entering the world of such a seemingly flawed institution.

Frankly, I’ve always loved the notion of queers as outsiders, leather clad rebels and creative rogues. I was worried where our next Klaus Nomi’s and Andy Warhol’s and Quentin Crisp’s would come from if every bent mystic settled down into domestic bliss. I, also, resented the fact that this pretty issue took focus away from such serious queer plights as the growing number of homeless youth and the disfranchising of our aging forebears.

But, things changed a bit when President Obama actually mentioned the GLBT community in his reelection speech in 2012. Being acknowledged, in such a public way, made me feel like I was finally being granted a public significance that I never knew I had longed for. I felt a true sense of joy and it seemed like Dylan’s 60s proclamation was finally coming true for those who lived their lives within a tinge of pink – the times truly were changing.

Then when Illinois, the state I am based in, passed its own Marriage Equality Law, I was, once again, surprised at the happiness I felt. I still often, inwardly, shudder at the thought of being bound completely to one person. But, now I catch myself musing, absent mindedly, as I leave the gym with thoughts of some tattooed stud I’ve just seen dancing through my head, “Hey, I could marry him now.”

I, finally, got it with yesterday’s SCOTUS ruling, though. It’s not about marriage or straight institutions or the ultimate possibility of trial separations or having to deal with divorce. It truly is about a community of people being considered full human beings, not above or below, but equal to everybody else. It’s crazy how long it took me to realize that. Importantly, I, also, see how excited my punk rock buddies and horror loving kin are about this issue and realize that the GLBT community can never be completely homogenized. What a relief!

But, I firmly believe, now that we have even focus, it’s not the time to rest. It’s truly time to start working on some of those less pleasant realities…violence against our trans brother and sisters and the hatred expressed towards our immigrant populations… and to prepare for those (sure to come) attacks from the right!

Are you with me?
