Review: The Vatican Tapes

Published July 30, 2015 by biggayhorrorfan

That Catholic upbringing never quite leaves you, does it? I’ve been a card carrying Agnostic for years now, but the thought of Satan still gives me the willies!

Thus, unlike a seeming majority of film critics, I truly enjoyed current theatrical release The Vatican Tapes. Revolving around the dissolution of the life of a young woman named Angela (a multileveled Olivia Dudley); TVT eventually promises the rise of a female Anti-Christ, a genre awesomeness that set my little red rebel heart tittering with joy.vatican-tapes

Director Mark Neveldine and writer Christopher Borrelli, also, supply the necessary ingredients that every lover of The Omen series might, readily, expect. There is the presence of ominous ravens as Angela’s spiritual guides and plenty of physical mayhem occurs to anyone who might threaten her ascent. The film’s most sensational sequence involves a group of restless mental patients who are lured into homicidal activity by one of Angela’s ominously whispered chants. Kathleen Robertson (Scary Movie 2, Psycho Beach Party), also, compels as Angela’s psychiatrist, who is the chilling recipient of the otherworldly tortured woman’s prescient gifts. Best of all, this feature offers up a female horror figure that isn’t a wispy ghost (Darkness Falls, Insidious, Stay Alive, Woman in Black) but a complicated, flesh and blood anti-heroine.

Neveldine’s casting choices are, also, spot-on with character actors like Michael Pena, Dougray Scott, (B-movie King) Michael Pare, Djimon Hounsou and Gossip Girl’s John Patrick Amedori providing appropriate texture and Shakespearian gravitas to the proceedings.

Granted, it doesn’t break the waves into a superhumanly new form of cinema, but The Vatican Tapes does deliver exactly what everyone wants in a possession flick. It’s a well done, (fairly) standard operation that torch bears the way into spooky fun for anyone who is willing to take the ride.

Revenge of the Killer Shrews

There are some things that you just can’t keep down. That bottle of whiskey you slammed last night, for instance, and, naturally, those very aggressive, highly enjoyable killer shrews!

Yep, director-writer Bart Grieb is, happily, revamping the 1959 camp monster classic The Killer Shrews with the upcoming Revenge of the Killer Shrews. It really feels like a (toothy) dog’s life now, no?

….and I, for one, can’t think of a better way to honor the filmic legacy of James Best (1926-2015), that Dukes of Hazzard stalwart and the original film’s lead, than by revisiting this stranded island of corrupted celluloid, once again!

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Joey Heatherton

Like wisps of cotton candy brought to vibrant life, 60s starlet Joey Heatherton looks almost edible in the teen thriller My Blood Runs Cold. Her lusciousness here is underscored by her credible sauciness as a spoiled heiress – and the sexy vocal chills she provides with the song (of the same title) that she recorded to cash in on the film’s hoped for success.

Heatherton, who, also, faced down the murderous wraith of Richard Burton in 1972’s Bluebeard, adds an appropriate sense of fear to the girl group atmosphere on this enjoyable number, one that isn’t actually featured on the film’s soundtrack, itself.

Here’s a reason to bloody celebrate.

Jason Sharman’s gay themed horror short Happy Birthday Chad has been dominating the festival circuit! It even won the Best Emerging Canadian Artist award at 2013’s Inside Out Fest.

That sounds like more than enough reason to join the cake blasting fun at http://www.facebook.com/happybirthdaychad to me!

…and if there is room for a sequel, Jason, may I suggest Happy Birthday Brian (Who is a Big Gay Horror Fan) as a follow-up title? 🙂

No? Ah, well….until the next time – SWEET love and pink GRUE, Big Gay Horror Fan!

Zombinatrix

Sometimes a name just says it all.

Such is the case with Zombinatrix, the new horror-comedy being put together by indie horror princess Bianca Allaine (Albino Farm, Web of Deceit, Watch These Films with Bianca Allaine) and writer-director Michael Kyne.

That name (and the saucy tag line) causes one to, brilliantly, imagine the multiple delights that this film will, hopefully, have to offer.

So, be sure to keep up with all of the whip bearing, leather clad undeadness at

Kelli Maroney in Gila!

Published July 21, 2015 by biggayhorrorfan

Leaping lizards! Known for her sassy portrayals in such cult classics as Night of the Comet, Chopping Mall and Zero Boys, genre goddess Kelli Maroney was, smartly, hired by director (and frequent collaborator) Jim Wynorski to appear in 2012’s low budget, truly fun Gila!, a film that chronicles the mass destruction that occurs when a green scaled monster goes on a rampage, during the holiday season, in a small town.

A revamp of the 1959 drive-in staple The Giant Gila Monster, Gila!, which recently screened at G-FEST 2015 in Chicago, is filmed with boundless enthusiasm by Wynorski, who, seemingly, adores the source material.

Thankfully, on what was surely a quick shoot, Wynorski is aided here by such performing veterans as Maroney, Don Sullivan (the original film’s lead), Julie McCullough and Terence Knox.

Maroney, naturally, shines the brightest, giving her Officer Wilma a charm and saucy outlook that radiates on-screen. Whether sweetly defying Knox’s Sherriff, flirting with the handsome male lead or (spoiler alert) meeting her demise in a very tongue and cheek way, Maroney is a scene stealer.

But, no surprise there, right?

Christopher Lee Tribute

Published July 21, 2015 by biggayhorrorfan

Terror in the Aisles’ latest event is a Christopher Lee tribute and will feature screenings of Death Line (Raw Meat), The Wicker Man and The Horror of Dracula.

Of course, what makes this particular evening even cooler is the participation of Death Line director Gary Sherman. The personable Sherman is one of the greatest cult film directors of the 80s with such credits as Dead and Buried, Vice Squad, Wanted: Dead or Alive, Poltergeist III and (the seriously underrated) Lisa under his blood stained celluloid belt.

The event, which also features the debut screenings of various shorts and trailers, takes place in Chicago on Saturday, July 25th.

In my opinion, if you going to get stalked down by a heavy breathing psycho on wheels then there is no one better to have on your (trying to) getaway vehicle’s radio than vibrant, dusty voiced Brenda Lee.

Apparently, the producers of 2001 thriller Joy Ride agree with me. They featured two songs from Lee on the soundtrack to that truck stop inducing terror ride.

Here’s one of ‘em. Roll the windows down and enjoy!

Horror, She Wrote: Lee Meriwether and Michelle Johnson

Published July 18, 2015 by biggayhorrorfan

Horror, She Wrote explores the episodes of the ever-popular detective series Murder, She Wrote, featuring Angela Lansbury’s unstoppable Jessica Fletcher, that were highlighted by performances from genre film actors.

Of all the things that an excess of television viewing can tell you, to never get on a ship with Lee Meriwether may be the most important! Lee 1

A co-starring role in the 1978 television film Cruise into Terror found the luscious, amber waved Meriwether seduced by a devilish sarcophagus. Her 1993 appearance on the Ship of Thieves episode of Murder, She Wrote, meanwhile, allowed her to indulge in even deadlier circumstances. As the sophisticated Leslie Hunter, Jessica’s old college pal, Meriwether appears to be aglow with love for the captain of a soon to be retired ship. But the closing circumstances reveal very sinister edges to Hunter’s character, facets that Meriwether embraces with clipped intensity.

Lee2Nicely, on this voyage, Meriwether is joined in mercenary activity by the equally stunning Michelle Johnson (Waxwork, Dr. Giggles, Blood Ties, Werewolf). Johnson provides smoothly evil emoting, as well, making this particular outing a delicious excursion for those who like their femmes with a dubious edge.
