While the glorious (and extremely classy) Vikki Carr’s exploitation credits are limited – she provided the singing voice for Cyd Charisse in the 60s spy caper Matt Helm and makes an appearance on the soundtrack for Point of No Return, the American remake of La Femme Nikita – she definitely nails the gritty essence of such anti-heroes as The Evil Dead’s Ash, Hardware’s Moses and Demon Knight’s Brayker with her take on Kris Kristofferson’s cigarette stained Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down.

Captured on her sophisticated Nashville By Carr, her version even earned the respect of the legendary Johnny Cash:

The perfect coda for a survivor’s despair, Carr’s subtly dramatic take would fit perfectly playing over the end titles of many a weary splatter fest.

Dale VanThomme’s awesome horror-punk solo project boasts titles scrubbed from such classics as I Drink Your Blood, Hatchet for the Honeymoon and Nightmare City, all delivered with aggressively fun Ramones style zaniness.

Heck, even when his songs are populated with evisceration of the female form, VanThomme’s energy is so joyously tongue-in-cheek that no one should be too offended. And if they are – well, isn’t that just part of the fun?!?

She should be known as the Queen of Everything! For while Patti Page is best known to old school terror lovers as the warbler of the theme song to Hush…Hush…Sweet Charlotte (although her version does not appear in the film itself), she mastered everything from country (Detour) to MOR pop (Tennessee Waltz)to mild rock-n-roll (Most People Get Married). She was, also, the high priestess of the novelty song with both schmaltzy sweetness (How Much is that Doggie in the Window?) and truly bizarre outings (The Mama Doll Song) littered among her offerings.

Interestingly, she was often noted for successfully multi-tracking her voice, as well. (Take that, Britney Spears!)This technique was put to especially good use in the gothic western story song, One of Us Will Weep Tonight:

But to many, the divinely groovy Gale Garnett was a swinging 60s songstress, best known for that sweetly delivered ode to romantic freedom We’ll Sing in the Sunshine.

Here, the lovely, psychedelically tinged Where Do You Go To Go Away finds the dreamy voiced wonder exploring foreign lands – including the cool (and sexy) reaches of hell!

Indeed, The Marvelettes take on Smokey Robinson’s classic track The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game is full of menacing slink. In fact, Wanda Rogers’ seductive lead vocal would probably put some fear into even the most determined monster. And I don’t mean Motown maestro Berry Gordy (who, traditionally, robbed these amazing women of the majority of the group’s profits) – though, I suppose, ultimately, that wouldn’t be far off base!

Before the dirt was piled upon the dissonant grave created by (Washington D.C. based) female trio Slant 6, they quickly released an EP that asked the question What Kind of Monster Are You? and embodied un-deadly cover antics on their final (awesomely titled) recording Inzombia!

In existence for a mere three years (1992-1995), the amazingly creative Christina Billotte (now rumored to be a ceramics artist), the magnetic Myra Power and the ecstatic-ly limber Marge Marshall, ultimately, gave us spookily enhanced, unforgettable memories of sonic awesomeness.

Need a New Sun Rising from her beautifully realized recording Welcome is a poetically potent reminder of life’s beauty and an amazing hymn to determined survival. In fact, this layered masterpiece could serve as an empowering theme song for all the final girls who conquer the uncompromising horrors of many a slasher classic.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Judy Garland

Besides her famed enactment of Wizard of Oz’s Dorothy, arguably one of cinema’s first final girls, and a one-off episode of the radio show Suspense (in which she played a threatened waitress), performing powerhouse Judy Garland is not known for works of terror.

But her 1961 cut Sweet Danger takes a slightly frightening look at the powers of love. Featuring a menace of background horns, a la John Barry, this number could have fit perfectly in any number of James Bond seduction scenes.
