Syreeta

Known for the celestial soar of her range, the singular Syreeta (Wright) was often regarded in terms of her associations with other musicians. She was briefly married to Stevie Wonder, who produced her second album, and her work with Billy Preston resulted in her best known recording, With You I’m Born Again. But she was much more than a muse to great men, often writing her own material and holding her own in the often unscrupulous dealings of the entertainment industry. Happy

Horror fans, meanwhile, are in eternal thrall of her distinctive vocals from the theme of Happy Birthday to Me. Wright, chillingly, captures the haunting dynamics of this classic slasher with her presentation here, proving that the best singers are often the best actors, as well.

Further adding to her appeal, her (out of print) 1983 album The Spell contained fun elements of pop, new wave and funk.

Dying from complications from cancer at far too young an age, Syreeta is rightfully held in high regard not only by lovers of the Motown Sound, but by appreciative music lovers of all varieties.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Chaka Khan

There is probably one scene in 1981’s The Fan that queer horror freaks remember even more than all those glorious Lauren Bacall production numbers. Of course, that is the moment when Michael Biehn’s twisted Douglas Breen picks up a similar looking man (Terrence Marinan) in a gay bar. While problematic, showing another instance of society’s perception of the homosexual male as a victim, it also truly resonated with a generation who wasn’t used to representation of any sort on the silver screen.

Playing, perhaps ironically, in the background as this deadly seduction occurs is the Junior Walker & the All Stars’ version of How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You). H-m-m…maybe not, Michael! But there is one thing we can all probably agree on. Chaka Khan’s version of the song, famously performed by everyone from Marvin Gaye to James Taylor, is truly killer – in the best possible way!

A mother’s quest for vengeance strikes at the heart of the much ridiculed Jaws: The Revenge. I, for one, have always taken this goofy showcase for the determined talents of Lorraine Gary as a fun, feminist uprising and Stacy Lattisaw’s song Nail it to the Wall, featured on the film’s soundtrack, definitely reflects the power of a woman at her fullest strength.

Lattisaw, who enjoyed a number of bouncy, beloved hits throughout the ‘80s, is still performing in a spiritualistic capacity and can be visited at www.stacylattisaw.org.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Barbara McNair

Cult aficionados know the exquisite Barbara McNair from her association with writer-director Jess Franco. Forever tempting in Venus in Furs, one of Franco’s most fully realized fever dreams, she also sang the theme song to 99 Women, one of his more popular (and sleazy) women in prison epics.

barbara venusBut McNair was a maverick on many levels. She was the first black woman to host her own syndicated variety show. She also co-starred on Broadway and recorded for Motown Records, scoring a minor hit or two with them. Appearing on many of the hottest shows of the ‘60s and ‘70s, she always added elegance and flair, as well.

Here, she gives the dapper, joking Dean Martin a run for his money with their take on the standard, The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, an appropriate title for a horror blog if there ever was one.

McNair, who passed away from throat cancer in 2007, lives on in memory at http://www.barbaramcnair.com.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Martha Reeves and the Vandellas

She was one of Motown’s reigning divas and, along with her famed backup group the Vandellas, Martha Reeves also provided one of the most prescient songs on the 1976 Carrie soundtrack.

carrie-1976-19-seductive-chrisAs the evil minded Chris (Nancy Allen) and Billy (John Travolta) cruise around, conspiring revenge and destruction, Heat Wave, one of Reeves’ most iconic numbers, plays on the car radio. With all the fiery prom night action that occurs soon after, this song proves to be a wise choice, full of dark, foreshadowing measures.

Reeves, who has also worked as a journalist and politician, still performs around the world, often in benefit concerts. More information on her astounding career and activities is available at http://www.missmarthareeves.com/.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Diana Ross

Diana-eaten
H. G. Wells probably never planned on this! But, that old pervert probably would have liked it! Trying to reinvent herself after years of Motown servitude, Diana Ross’ musical career on RCA records included an eclectic mix of operatic pop ballads (All of You), covers (Why Do Fools Fall in Love?) and sassy odes to sexuality (Muscles).

Astute horror freaks, though, know she got maximum mileage out of terror classic The Island of Dr. Moreau with Eaten Alive, the title track of her 1985 release.

…and while Joseph Gian, Ross’ co-star in the video, is probably best known for his work as Det. Tom Ryan on Knots Landing, he, also, has a couple horror credits on his resume with roles in The Night Stalker (1987) and Godzilla: The Series. He is, also, rumored to have joined the cast of the upcoming But Deliver Us From Evil, a film that details what happens when a demon succubus begins wiping out the male population of New York. Hmm…I bet he’s now glad that the divine Miss Ross gave him a little practice, all those years ago!

Music to Make Horror Movies By: The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game (Tne Marvelettes)

Published August 24, 2014 by biggayhorrorfan

Somebody better lock these chicks up! This is filthy!

Indeed, The Marvelettes take on Smokey Robinson’s classic track The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game is full of menacing slink. In fact, Wanda Rogers’ seductive lead vocal would probably put some fear into even the most determined monster. And I don’t mean Motown maestro Berry Gordy (who, traditionally, robbed these amazing women of the majority of the group’s profits) – though, I suppose, ultimately, that wouldn’t be far off base!

Oh, well… For now, just listen and enjoy!
