The Red Giallo Antics of Days’ Eve

Eve Red Duo

Sporting a giallo red dress, her form surrounded by pure white lighting while an offscreen wind machine ruffled her hair dramatically, Days of Our Lives perennial bad girl Eve Donovan made her grand re-entrance on the daytime scene this past week.

Determined to stop reformed serial killer Ben Weston (subtly intense Robert Scott Wilson) from finding happiness on his wedding day to refreshingly honest heroine Ciara Brady (the forever spunky Victoria Konefal) , Donovan deployed a bomb as a distraction tactic (just as the ceremony completed) and whisked the former compulsive murderer off to a mysterious warehouse lair. As portrayer Kassie DePaiva notes in a recent interview, Eve has “definitely gone off the deep end!” Of course, this is not surprising if one charts the series of misguided love affairs, false accusations and general bad luck that have plagued this character during the prime of her run on the show. Add in the fact that during his long-ago reign of terror, Ben claimed Eve’s sweet daughter Paige as one of his victims and you have a Molotov cocktail of intense motivation happening here. Now Eve is determined to brainwash Ben into murdering his new wife, allowing him to liberally partake in the intense pain that she herself feels over the loss of her greatest love, her one and only child.

Of course, as the mechanics of this revenge-soaked plot play out one truly hopes that the atmosphere will remain saturated in the glow of the European revenge horror films that it is already nicely imitating.

One thing will remain certain, though. DePaiva, who has always immersed herself into the mindset of every character that she plays, will compel and entrance….and possibly find herself with an Emmy nomination for her work – a feat that would bring her total nods for her efforts with this role up to three.

Review: Bad Witch

Bad Witch

High school awfulness is just something you seemingly have to live through. Any attempts to balance the scale just end up in Carrie-style mayhem. This definitely proves true for the participants in the upcoming Bad Witch, a fun film written by James Hennigan and co-directed by Victor Fink & Joshua Land.

At first, Roland Grimm (Jackson Trent) thinks Xander Perkins (Chris Koslowski) is a gift, a miracle seemingly delivered from the skies to help combat his teenage awkwardness. But as Perkins’ witchcraft laden solutions to Grimm’s problems begin to backfire, the young man soon regrets his involvement with this handsome, trouble making grifter. In fact, as death and betrayal overtake his world, Roland may soon pay the ultimate price for his association with the dark side.

Anchored around the casual, friendly energy of Koslowski and Trent, Bad Witch dabbles in gooey body horror, male sexuality and willingly explores a culture that is beginning to move away from labels as it restructures its sense of societal taboos. Here, Xander’s insistence that he is a “witch” not a “warlock” will truly make sense to a generation of film lovers who refuse to define themselves within the long accepted pronouns and gender rules. Nicely, the film also contains a very comical, truly gruesome death sequence involving one of Roland’s rivals – a moment that is almost worth the price of admission here alone.

Interestingly, while there is no homosexual tension between the film’s leads, Bad Witch does break boundaries by focusing on Koslowski’s taut masculinity. In a world where gorgeous, often traumatized women still serve as the focal point of horror projects, this celebration of male beauty is a novelty in itself. A natural progression from such witch based projects as I Married A Witch and Bell Book and Candle (from the ‘40s and ‘50s) and The Witches and The Craft (from the ‘90s), Bad Witch is sure to find many fans among those who like their terror delivered with a quick chant and an eager spell or two.

Bubblegum

It’s Pride Month and in celebration, Count the Clock Productions does The Favourite one better. Their recently released music video Bubblegum features a vengeful servant playing florescent tricks on an out of control monarch. Revenge has never quite been so brightly fun!

Director Zach Lorkiewicz’s consistent sense of style, a frosty mélange of Richard Avedon morphed into David LaChapelle’s visual torso, is present here…along with a beautiful half naked milk pourer. That tune is pretty sweet, too!

Who Killed the Homecoming Queen?

One of my fondest memories of high school – yes, I do have one or two! – was when Kristin, my very blonde and pretty senior prom date, wore the same dress as the very nasty, slightly dog faced class president. I wasn’t very popular (and that moment may have made me even more of a pariah to some) but Kristin definitely won the “Who Wore It Better” poll that night.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Stacy Lattisaw

A mother’s quest for vengeance strikes at the heart of the much ridiculed Jaws: The Revenge. I, for one, have always taken this goofy showcase for the determined talents of Lorraine Gary as a fun, feminist uprising and Stacy Lattisaw’s song Nail it to the Wall, featured on the film’s soundtrack, definitely reflects the power of a woman at her fullest strength.

Lattisaw, who enjoyed a number of bouncy, beloved hits throughout the ‘80s, is still performing in a spiritualistic capacity and can be visited at www.stacylattisaw.org.

Review: Daddy’s Little Girl

One summer afternoon, my brother and I pushed (neighborhood bully) Robbie off his Big Wheel for picking on our sister. That, either fortunately or unfortunately, is the extent of my personal revenge motifs.

In writer-director Chris Sun’s chilling Daddy’s Little Girl (released on May 13th, 2014 by Breaking Glass Pictures), an anguished father named Derek (a leveled, award winning Michael Thomson) takes comeuppance to the extreme when his 6 year old daughter (a perfectly angelic Billi Baker) is murdered. After stumbling upon the perpetrator of the crime, and also discovering that the savage criminal had multiple victims, Derek enacts a torturous revenge.

Despite the hard-to-take, real life nature of the subject, Sun ably divides this picture into distinct arcs (the set-up, the anguished downfall, the shocking realization, the plotting of and carrying out of the torturous revenge) and adds enough pulpy, 70s era grit to make the experience an frequently enjoyable and cinematically palatable one. The savagery of Derek’s retaliation is indeed hard-to-take, but Sun intersperses these bloody exchanges with scenes of a duo of dedicated detectives finally closing in on the culprit and some bizarrely enjoyable exchanges between Derek and his family members and friends.

Granted, Derek’s discovery of the killer happens a bit too conveniently and the evidence he finds is too out-in-the-open to be quite believable. But these are small flaws in Sun’s relentless vision. Its starkness, though, gains distinct justification by the true-to-life headlines that chillingly decorate the closing credits of the film.

Assisted by a charming, ingeniously crafted performance by Christian Radford as Derek’s roguish brother Tommy, Daddy’s Little Girl is a powerful mixture of grindhouse cinema and real life crime, well worth seeking out by the truly strong at heart.
