Music to Make Horror Movies By: Pat Benatar

Capitalizing on Alice Cooper’s 1978 From the Inside, a madhouse based concept LP and 1979 Marvel comic book; boundary leaping pop star Pat Benatar unleashed Get Nervous, her fourth offering, upon the world in 1982. While not containing the cinematic through line of Cooper’s work, the cover imagery does contain an undeniably straitjacketed vibe and the tone of many of the rock offerings contained within is decidedly dark. Indeed, songs such as Looking for a Stranger, Fight it Out, The Victim and I Want Out are almost jittery with angst.

The title offering, Anxiety (Get Nervous) , propelled by agitated guitars, provides skittery aural delights, as well. The video, meanwhile, captures a delightful, horror filled take on one of life’s unpleasant realities, a trip to the dentist, and allows Benatar to show off some of the best Bride of Frankenstein hair this side of Elsa Lanchester!

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Got A Girl

She’s a little bit Nancy Sinatra (or, perhaps, more accurately Francoise Hardy)…and a little bit sequel queen. Indeed, with roles in The Ring 2, Final Destination 3 and re-imaginings of Black Christmas and The Thing, the lovely Mary Elizabeth Winstead has been one of the most visible actresses in the terror genre since the millennium struck red.

Always engaging, Winstead, whose other genre credits include Wolf Lake and Death Proof, has recently formed Got A Girl with Dan the Automator. Focused on their love of 60s beats and French pop, their collaboration is a swirling delight.

Filled with odd strokes of tension and a John Barry-like flair, did we live too fast, the first track off their full length offering i love you but i must drive off this cliff now is, truly, one of their best moments.

Music to Make Horror Films By: the Mountain Goats

With song titles like Damn These Vampires and The Autopsy Garland, brilliantly quirky the Mountain Goats (led by twisty wordsmith John Darnielle) should already be on every freaky terror fan’s playlist.

Linda Blair was Born Innocent, while seemingly having little to do with the 70s television film that genre icon Blair starred in, is one of their more fun, propulsive numbers. Besides, who can resist a title like that?!?

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Hildegard Knef

Oh, to be vaguely disaffected and totally European. Oh, to be Hildegard Knef, conqueror of Bacharach and Ella Fitzgerald!

Best known to discerning scare fiends for playing the destructively soulless Alraune in Alraune (1952), for fighting back against man eating seaweed in Hammer’s The Lost Continent (1968) and for giving Linda Blair the chills in 1988 horror cheese-fest Witchery, German born Hildegard Knef (1925-2002) was also a fairly popular chanteuse of the Marlene Dietrich variety. In fact, jazz legend Fitzgerald claimed Knef was “the greatest singer without a voice”. Her legacy is such that music wunderkinds Whirlpool Productions reunited in 2012, devoting an entire CD to remixes of her best known work.

Here, we take it old school, though. But even while Knef is declaring her passion with This Girl’s In Love With You, doesn’t she just seem perfectly bored and above it all? Divine!

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Suzi Quatro

If rumors are to be believed – and why shouldn’t they be? – it seems that leather bound rock goddess Suzi Quatro was originally slated to play Sheryl Ann, Lori’s flirty acquaintance, in Clive Barker’s Nightbreed.

While her absence (despite Debora Weston’s exemplary work in the role) may definitely provide an ache for terror clad rock fans, at least Quatro, best known to American audiences for her stint as Leather Tuscadero on Happy Days, employed some fun and frightening imagery in her early 70s hit Devil Gate Drive.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Pseudo Echo

Roses, carnations, blood red pansies. Do I smell a reunion in the air? Well, maybe not. But while 2015 promises a new take on Friday the 13th’s iconic Jason, 2014 saw the release of new music from Australian New Wave giants Pseudo Echo, as well.

Slasher freaks, of course, are familiar with the Pseudo crew due to their haunting 80s track His Eyes which found premium placement in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, the fourth sequel in the original series.

The new stuff, meanwhile, puts a bit more dance in your pants, but is compelling nonetheless.

Who says cute and quirky can’t have bite? Jangly indie musician Elizabeth Ziman of Elizabeth and the Catapult is known for her sweet keyboard driven pop songs.

Yet, the cut Salt of the Earth from Like it Never Happened, her latest release, features ominous and spooky textures and, ultimately, makes the art of romance seem like an obsessive and mysterious culture.

Cue those psychos for love!

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Tim Curry

This truly calls for some high heels and fishnets! Renowned for his lascivious portrayals in such cult classics as The Rocky Horror Picture Show and It, the versatile Tim Curry, also, released three solo albums in the late 70s and early 80s.

1981’s Simplicity, the last of the three, contains a truly spooky version of Squeeze’s Take Me I’m Yours. Menacing and sexual, this cut is only a little over three minutes, but it is truly one of Curry’s finest hours.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: David Johansen

Forever proving a connective energy between rock n roll and horror, the outrageous antics of such bands as KISS, Twisted Sister, The Runaways and New York Dolls have always found favor with fans of terror.

Yum! The Dolls!

David Johansen, the eclectic lead singer of the glamorous, hyperactive New York Dolls, took the strand even further by essaying roles in such fright flicks as Tales from the Darkside: The Movie (1990) and Campfire Stories (2001). His 1984 solo album Sweet Revenge (which directly preceded his popular stint as Buster Poindexter), also, featured such ominous creations as the title track, Too Many Midnights (is there such a thing?) and Big Trouble.

Johansen even gave a highly energetic performance of the album’s King of Babylon on the (then) mega-blockbuster television series Miami Vice:

Granted his rap, there, may have some shrieking in terror – but more forgiving souls will believe that, always a consummate professional, he delivers it with gutsy panache.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Anne Bobby

Scream Factory’s recent release of the Director’s Cut of Nightbreed reinstates a musical number, featuring Anne Bobby’s devoted Lori, that has been practically invisible for over twenty years.

But Back to My Routes, Bobby’s latest cabaret show at the 54 Below Supper Club in New York City, showed that this well traveled performer hasn’t been hiding her eclectic musical gifts over the years. Indeed, as a cast member of the ahead-of-its-time Cop Rock and such acclaimed stage productions as The York Theatre Company’s revival of Merrily We Roll Along, Bobby has been indulging in the gift of song for decades.

But this current show, featuring selections by Bruce Springsteen, The Kinks, The Ronettes and other unusually great artists, is perhaps Bobby’s finest achievement to date. Crisp, sharp and passionate, this is a cabaret theater at its best, as this video featuring her dramatic take on Peter Gabriel’s Here Comes The Flood certainly proves.
