Music to Make Horror Movies By: Sam Harris

It wasn’t just rockers like Alice Cooper and Pat Benatar who embraced the asylum esthetic with their recordings. ‘80s pop sensation Sam Harris utilized the strait jacket as a colorful fashion accessory on the back portrait of his debut album, as well.
Such a bad boy move might seem the antithesis of Harris’ colorful reality star beginnings.

But Harris’ biggest hit Sugar Don’t Bite definitely wasn’t playing around. In fact, this track makes being a “bleeder” sound like a sexual position well worth trying out on some hot Saturday night.

Of course, Harris, an openly gay man whose career has encompassed everything from turns on Broadway to penning a memoir called Ham: Slices of a Life, is always serving up the sweet stuff at http://www.samharris.com/.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Goldie Hawn and Liza Minnelli

CBS television special 'Goldie and Liza Together,' September 22, 1979

Just like me, Goldie Hawn and Liza Minnelli have never quite made the curve. While my lack is probably imaginary and (possibly) self-inflicted, the only way Hawn and Minnelli didn’t quite got into the groove was with their horror credits.

But…Hawn did face down the terrors of an abusive ex in the 1991 thriller Deceived and is an integral part of the catty craziness of Death Becomes Her, a much loved take on body modification (that has many campy elements of terror). Minnelli, meanwhile, has provided gothic back-up vocals for both Alice Cooper and My Chemical Romance…earning her place in the hearts of everyone on eyeliner spectrum – from drag to punk rock.

In 1980 these two icons joined forces for Goldie and Liza Together… a truly colorful television special, indicative not only of the era but of the incredible talents involved.

The show aired twice, to less than stellar ratings, but it will forever remain a favorite to those who actually experienced in all of its initial flaming glory.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Alice Cooper

What am I gonna do?

The esteemed Alice Cooper has definitely hit the horror hotline with albums like Welcome to My Nightmare and by singing He’s Back (The Man Behind the Mask), the theme song to Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason’s Back.

But, this eclectic monster embraced the societal angst of many a terror freak, while dancing in the queer lined clouds of many a gay boy’s dreams, with his engaging Teenage Lament ’74 from Muscle of Love.

Featuring background vocals from such pink icons as Liza Minnelli, Labelle and Ronnie Spector, this number, focusing on those hellish years, is simply…heavenly.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Pat Benatar

Pat-Benatar-Get-Nervous-238139
Capitalizing on Alice Cooper’s 1978 From the Inside, a madhouse based concept LP and 1979 Marvel comic book; boundary leaping pop star Pat Benatar unleashed Get Nervous, her fourth offering, upon the world in 1982. While not containing the cinematic through line of Cooper’s work, the cover imagery does contain an undeniably straitjacketed vibe and the tone of many of the rock offerings contained within is decidedly dark. Indeed, songs such as Looking for a Stranger, Fight it Out, The Victim and I Want Out are almost jittery with angst.

The title offering, Anxiety (Get Nervous) , propelled by agitated guitars, provides skittery aural delights, as well. The video, meanwhile, captures a delightful, horror filled take on one of life’s unpleasant realities, a trip to the dentist, and allows Benatar to show off some of the best Bride of Frankenstein hair this side of Elsa Lanchester!

You can keep up with all of Benatar’s monstrous activities as http://www.benatargiraldo.com, as well.
