Music to Make Horror Movies By: Phoebe Legere

She melted Toxie’s heart as the sweet, resourceful Claire in Toxic Avenger II and Toxic Avenger III, but the divine Phoebe Legere has always been more than just of the sum of her (admittedly) beautiful parts.

A world renowned composer, performance artist, actress and the full embodiment of her self-created Total Art Synthesis, Legere always transforms her lucky audiences, wholeheartedly.

Releasing 11 CDs of music over the years, Legere made cinematic waves in the classic 1988 documentary Mondo New York, performing one of her signature songs Marilyn Monroe.

Jill Banner and Washburn, Spider Baby

Fear of the arachnid shouldn’t stop anyone from listening to Spider Baby star Beverly Washburn’s sweet ode to loneliness Everybody Loves Saturday Night. Written by folk legend Pete Seeger, this saccharine slab of awesomeness was delivered to the public in 1963 yet still retains a slick charm.

While her beguiling maliciousness in the above mentioned Jack Hill classic has, rightfully, gained her the most love from terror specialists, Washburn has, also, logged potent appearances in such genre projects as (the Boris Karloff hosted) Thriller and Ted V. Mikel’s recent Demon Haunt.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Laura Marling

Its always the quiet, sweet looking ones, no?!?

Laura Marling’s now song False Hope has been described as apocalyptic as a Walking Dead episode by Rolling Stone and definitely features enough references to crazed women, sleepless nights and dramatic uncertainty to be on the daily soundtrack of every restless terror freak.

It’s, also, a perfect advertisement for her upcoming Short Movie, which gets a release on March 23rd, 2015!

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Jack Off Jill

Considered the female fronted equivalent of Marilyn Manson, Fort Lauderdale goth rockers Jack Off Jill, guided for its eight years of existence by the glorious Jessicka (Addams) and Robin Moulder, should have shelf space in every terror loving freak’s audio palace.

That their brilliant track Rabiteen runs over the closing credits of the disturbing 1998 exploitation offering Wicked, which floated in limbo until Julia Stiles’ bankability allowed it a release in 2001, should definitely earn them some further genre respect, as well.

Despite a breakup in 2000, the band still has an website available at http://www.jackoffjill.com.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Sandie Shaw

How about a 60s anthem about romantic disappointment…with a possible sinister edge?

Sandie Shaw’s perky Girl Don’t Come gave a feminist ringtone to the being stood-up quandary, but looking at the lyrics through the eyes of an Alfred Hitchcock or a David Fincher gives this wistful tune a possibly dangerous connotation. Could the reason that the woman in question didn’t show be a bit darker than the simple whiff of whimsy implied?

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Alice Cooper

What am I gonna do?

The esteemed Alice Cooper has definitely hit the horror hotline with albums like Welcome to My Nightmare and by singing He’s Back (The Man Behind the Mask), the theme song to Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason’s Back.

But, this eclectic monster embraced the societal angst of many a terror freak, while dancing in the queer lined clouds of many a gay boy’s dreams, with his engaging Teenage Lament ’74 from Muscle of Love.

Featuring background vocals from such pink icons as Liza Minnelli, Labelle and Ronnie Spector, this number, focusing on those hellish years, is simply…heavenly.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Mirel Wagner

Simple, straightforward and spooky, Finnish singer Mirel Wagner’s songs are definitely influenced by her love of horror and old folk balladry. (In fact, she revealed, in one interview, that the atmospheric Night of the Hunter is one of her favorite films.)

Accordingly, When the Cellar Children See the Light of Day, her Sub Pop debut, is full of quiet, frightful ruminations, with The Dirt being one of the most effective.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Diana Ross

Published January 25, 2015 by biggayhorrorfan

Diana-eaten
H. G. Wells probably never planned on this! But, that old pervert probably would have liked it! Trying to reinvent herself after years of Motown servitude, Diana Ross’ musical career on RCA records included an eclectic mix of operatic pop ballads (All of You), covers (Why Do Fools Fall in Love?) and sassy odes to sexuality (Muscles).

Astute horror freaks, though, know she got maximum mileage out of terror classic The Island of Dr. Moreau with Eaten Alive, the title track of her 1985 release.

…and while Joseph Gian, Ross’ co-star in the video, is probably best known for his work as Det. Tom Ryan on Knots Landing, he, also, has a couple horror credits on his resume with roles in The Night Stalker (1987) and Godzilla: The Series. He is, also, rumored to have joined the cast of the upcoming But Deliver Us From Evil, a film that details what happens when a demon succubus begins wiping out the male population of New York. Hmm…I bet he’s now glad that the divine Miss Ross gave him a little practice, all those years ago!

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Pat Benatar

Published January 18, 2015 by biggayhorrorfan

Pat-Benatar-Get-Nervous-238139
Capitalizing on Alice Cooper’s 1978 From the Inside, a madhouse based concept LP and 1979 Marvel comic book; boundary leaping pop star Pat Benatar unleashed Get Nervous, her fourth offering, upon the world in 1982. While not containing the cinematic through line of Cooper’s work, the cover imagery does contain an undeniably straitjacketed vibe and the tone of many of the rock offerings contained within is decidedly dark. Indeed, songs such as Looking for a Stranger, Fight it Out, The Victim and I Want Out are almost jittery with angst.

The title offering, Anxiety (Get Nervous) , propelled by agitated guitars, provides skittery aural delights, as well. The video, meanwhile, captures a delightful, horror filled take on one of life’s unpleasant realities, a trip to the dentist, and allows Benatar to show off some of the best Bride of Frankenstein hair this side of Elsa Lanchester!

You can keep up with all of Benatar’s monstrous activities as http://www.benatargiraldo.com, as well.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Got A Girl

Published January 11, 2015 by biggayhorrorfan

got a girl
She’s a little bit Nancy Sinatra (or, perhaps, more accurately Francoise Hardy)…and a little bit sequel queen. Indeed, with roles in The Ring 2, Final Destination 3 and re-imaginings of Black Christmas and The Thing, the lovely Mary Elizabeth Winstead has been one of the most visible actresses in the terror genre since the millennium struck red.

Always engaging, Winstead, whose other genre credits include Wolf Lake and Death Proof, has recently formed Got A Girl with Dan the Automator. Focused on their love of 60s beats and French pop, their collaboration is a swirling delight.

Filled with odd strokes of tension and a John Barry-like flair, did we live too fast, the first track off their full length offering i love you but i must drive off this cliff now is, truly, one of their best moments.

Now, be sure to slink over to http://www.got-a-girl.com, as well.
