Brock Riebe’s Incall

Published April 9, 2015 by biggayhorrorfan

Director-writer-performer (Phew! I got tired just writing all of that!) Brock Riebe has stated that his new thriller Incall was inspired by such cult classics as Apartment Zero, Eating Raoul and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.

But, it looks like there may, also, be a bit of Strangers on a Train going on here, as well. What do you think?

For those that are curious (and c’mon, who isn’t?!?) Incall will be screening in Chicago on Friday, April 10th at 8:00 pm at The Nightingale Cinema on 1084 N. Milwaukee.

For all those who can’t make that and are still intrigued about this film, featuring a seemingly innocent masseuse lured into some pretty dangerous activity, be sure to check out the film’s website at:

The Power of Speaking Out!

Folks fighting the good fight!

Folks fighting the good fight!

I so wasn’t looking for another battle. The constant protesting against and arguing over the minutiae of Indiana’s RFRA law, last week, left me emotionally exhausted. But, I just couldn’t ignore this.

When researching a quick feature on the 2016 remount of Friday the 13th, yesterday, I came upon the Facebook page for the film. I, excitedly, checked it out and noticed that, on March 28th, the page was updated with the film’s new promo poster. While many fans were commenting on the plotline of the film and what certain wording on the poster implied, some idiot decided to leave this comment re: the poster’s image: “this pick is f—g gay as shit and slaps horror in the face . wtf is this garbage?”

The "Gay" Poster

The “Gay” Poster

Really? First of all, spell check, buddy! Secondly, I think the poster (pictured) was kind of cool. But, more importantly, I still can’t get over the fact that, in this day and age, the term gay is still be using as an insult and/or as a descriptor for something that is presumably weak or not kick-ass enough. It’s even more discouraging when it comes from a fan of an outsider genre such as horror.

Of course, the last thing I wanted to do was to get into an online shouting match with some buffoon. The idea of going back and forth, while surely being insulted, trying to explain human rights to someone who doesn’t want to get human rights was a totally wearying thought.

But, if the quick turnaround with RFRA taught me anything, it was that being quiet wouldn’t help anything. So, even though my brain was crying, I left this response for him: “As a gay man whose main friends are tattooed, queer hard ass punk rockers, I have to say this image definitely is NOT gay. & seeing as its 2015, isn’t it time that we stopped using gay as a derogatory descriptor?!?”

Then, what do you know?!? While I was taking a moment to wonder if said idiot would even understand anything I wrote, the administrators of the site, quickly, deleted his offensive statement, solving the situation in an incredibly timely manner. (Thank you, F13 folks!)

So, while I am still baffled and discouraged to know there are actually people who still think that my sexuality is wrong and/or makes me lesser than the average person, I am encouraged to be reminded that not speaking out is always the wrong path. Even when the results aren’t instantaneous, to be scared and silent is never the preferable way to live.

…and with that…Until the next time – SWEET love and pink GRUE, Big Gay Horror Fan!

Friday the 13th News!

Published April 8, 2015 by biggayhorrorfan

friday 13th new
There’s always good news and bad news, right?

The Hollywood Reporter recently revealed some more specifics behind the upcoming Friday the 13th film, scheduled to hit theaters on May 13th, 2016.

As for the less than happy news, the latest report does confirm that, as of this time, Platinum Dunes and Paramount are planning to use the found footage format for this latest venture. But, on the more positive side, it was noted that the aim of writer Nick Antosca’s (Hannibal, Teen Wolf) script will be to reveal why Jason has been an indestructible killing force for decades.

While this concept didn’t work so well for Michael and the original Halloween series, it is still an intriguing premise and, hopefully, Antosca will be able to work all forms of slasher magic within this overview.

Be sure to keep up with the latest developments on this project at https://www.facebook.com/Friday13th2015.

Palmer facing down the Animal!

Palmer facing down the Animal!

Even Betty Crocker must have had to let the beast out every once in awhile.

As evidenced by her single Animal, eclectic singer-actress KeKe Palmer, whose credits range from Akeelah and the Bee to the upcoming (eagerly anticipated) television series Scream Queens, must surely know how she felt.

The theme song to the fun 2014 beast in the woods horror epic of the same name, which featured Palmer in strong survivalist mode, Animal definitely proves that while romance can be untamed, it’s the creatures lurking in the shadows that are truly deadly.

Robert Z’Dar: In Memoriam

Published April 4, 2015 by biggayhorrorfan

We outsiders lost another one of our own this week.

Robert Z’Dar, best known for portraying the title character in the limb blastingly fun Maniac Cop series, died on March 30th at the age of 64. The sadness we feel should be potent. For just like Richard Kiel, who passed away this fall, Z’Dar taught us all that one’s physicality (and even one’s supposed abnormalities) should never get in the way of achieving a dream.

Indeed, Z’Dar never let cherubism, the condition that enlarged his jaw line; stop him from leading an eclectic existence, which included stints as a Chicago police officer and even a Chippendale’s dancer. It was as a movie heavy, though, where Z’Dar truly made his mark, a fact that seemed to please him. He often stated that he found villains more interesting to play than average run-of-the-mill citizens.drawing blood

…and talk about some villains! Besides the Maniac Cop films, Z’Dar’s juicy terror activities included such projects as Hellhole, Grotesque, The Night Stalker (which is noted for leading Z’Dar to the role of Matt Cordell in MC), Evil Altar and Soultaker. While his activity in that field was especially relevant in those 80s and 90s offerings, he also found a creative home in such recent, indie horror offerings as Drawing Blood and The Rockville Slayer, as well.

So, thanks Robert, for opening us moviegoers up to a world of fantastic possibilities. Your legacy shall live on in celluloid blood forever!

Show Freddy Some Lovin’!

Published April 2, 2015 by biggayhorrorfan

robert englund
In many ways, the horror film star truly doesn’t get much respect. An actress acquaintance of mine once revealed that local agents refused to see her, despite a healthy bounty of terror movie credits, until she landed a featured role on a more mainstream project.

Despite tremendous success, famed Nightmare on Elm Street fright legend Robert Englund must know her pain. Possessing a full bodied career (with 140 plus credits), including such blockbusters as Freddy Vs. Jason and the television mini-series V, Englund has yet to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The fact that Englund, who started out in the theater, adds such quirky, full bodied flavor to every project that he’s involved in, makes this oversight a true shame.

In 2010, a group of dedicated fans began a petition to rectify this situation. While, as previous sites have noted, a true campaign for this honor would involve the raising of the proper funds ($30,000), this fan tribute could indeed fuel a more legitimate expression of this desire. So, go ahead and sign it. It only takes a moment or two and goodwill and horror are always a glorious combination!

A world renowned composer, performance artist, actress and the full embodiment of her self-created Total Art Synthesis, Legere always transforms her lucky audiences, wholeheartedly.

What to do about Indiana!?!

Published March 28, 2015 by biggayhorrorfan

indiana state capital
Got some free time this afternoon and wondering what to do with that rage over Governor Pence passing the Religious Freedom Act in the state of Indiana? Well, you could build a dollhouse out of the bloody shards of your cuticles…or you could make your voice be heard.

Here are some suggestions, passed along the grapevine, by authors/political activists like Kathie Berqquist and Achy Obejas:

“:RE: INDIANA: Outraged?…. Here are some numbers to call…. Were you Greek in college? Call up the Indianapolis-based North-American Interfraternity Conference (317.872.1112) and let them know your outrage. A Pacers fan? Call 317.917.2500. A Colts fan? Call 317.297.2658. Do you use Prozac or Cialis? Call Indianapolis-based drug maker Eli Lilly (317.276.2000) and let them know you’ll be asking your doctor about other options. Maybe you’re celebrity-obsessed and want to call 212.975.3820 and ask Kim Izzo-Emmet, director of publicity for The Late Show with David Letterman, that Dave scold his native state on national television. Or maybe you’re old-school and just want to call the Indiana Office of Tourism (317.602.6641) or the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce (317.464.2222). Or tweet them at @VisitIndiana. But make a call or tweet or two or ten during your lunch break. Do something. The audacity of a state that calls itself “the crossroads of America”!” BOYCOTT: The 2015 Final Four takes place April 4th and April 6th at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. BOYCOTT because Pence signed RFRA.”

Well, get busy!
