Va-Va-Villainess: Ann-Margret

Published February 23, 2024 by biggayhorrorfan

Often playing sultry and seductive in her far-flung career, the incomparable Ann-Margret’s first attempt to break away from her initial sugar-pie image resulted in her appearing in the camp classic Kitten with a Whip. There, as the hotly homicidal Jody, she terrorized John Forsythe’s staid weekending businessman with pout worthy aplomb. Ridiculed at the time, the film eventually inspired many bad ass female musicians and young gay men who vowed, much like this B-Movie’s title character, to not take life’s homogenized shit lightly. Going down in a blaze of glory, Jody, despite her maniacal fixations, was a heroine to many of society’s lost and lonely & seemingly set the framework for the vengeful biker chicks in Faster, Pussycat! Kill! KIll!, another femme-strong cult classic.

Going forward though, this career gal’s man-eating characters were often imbued with a comic voluptuousness, Jody’s razor-sharp anger was not to be found in such schemers as Laurel in Bus Riley’s Back in Town, Jezebel Desire in The Cheap Detective or Charming Jones in The Villain. But the experience of playing those humorous variations on evilness, did seemingly allow her to add texture and depth to a variety of her performances, resulting in a part in the early ’90s that contained truly effective strokes of gray.

In Our Sons, one of several early television films taking on the AIDS crisis. this layered pro assumed the role of Luanne Barnes, a small-town mother who is, vehemently (at first), unaccepting of her dying son’s homosexuality. Course and nasty, Luanne eventually succumbs to her instinctual maternal nature and embraces her ailing child before he succumbs to the darkness. Acting most directly against fellow legend Julie Andrews, as a fellow mother, and Željko Ivanek, who effectively played her terminal offspring, this is a scorched earth performance. While Luanne is presented as the ultimate villain, having disowned her son due to his sexuality, she is also as achingly human, a masterful undertaking for A-M and a far, far cry from Kitten with a Whip’s steely yet fun one dimensionality.

Horror Hall of Fame:

While she does make an appearance in 2006’s mind-twisting (little seen) Memories, featuring the dashing Billy Zane, A-M’s most popular genre undertaking is 1978’s Magic. This dark tale of puppetry and madness gave her a chance to play sweetly passionate Peggy Ann Snow opposite future Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Eddie Murphy

A modern king of comedy, Eddie Murphy’s time as a nocturnal scavenger in Vampire in Brooklyn turned out to be one of his less toothy ventures in cinematic mayhem. Of course, as with many others, the uneven specters of love have perhaps haunted Murphy with more aplomb than any failed celluloid enterprise. Here, his ‘80s hit Party All The Time serves as prime evidence.

As with other funny men, Murphy has had extremely homophobic moments in his material. He apologized in 1996 for comments about the AIDS crisis in his film Delirious, confirming that he wasn’t “anti-gay”. As another twenty some years have passed since then, I am sure that he has evolved even further and in that spirit of hope and forgiveness, I post this column here.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Bette Midler

From the towel clad patrons of NYC Bathhouses to distinguished opening night Broadway crowds, the divine Bette Midler has entertained them all. Nicely, she has also noticeably charmed a generation of queer terror lovers with her hysterical take on witchery in the beloved horror comedy Hocus Pocus.

Thankfully, Midler also worked some of that dark magic with her take on My Eye On You. This mysteriously possessive tune is a highlight of No Frills, her enjoyable album of rock and New Wave numbers. A deadly journey in less than 4 minutes, this number proves why Midler always has us risking our lives by coming back for more.

Review: One-Armed Rabbit

One-Armed Rabbit Colleen.jpg

Many are the mornings that I wake up in my bed and can’t remember what day it is…or the time…or who that is beside me. Well, that last statement isn’t true. No stranger is ever there beside me. And as tragic as that may be, the fate of Colleen Elizabeth Miller’s military type character in One-Armed Rabbit is much worse.

In this fun short, developed and enacted by Miller, a young woman wakes up in the desert with no memory of how she got there or where the plane that was carrying her disappeared to. Thankfully, she’s got survival skills. Although, they not be as helpful as she hopes. There is a pesky critter wandering that sandy wilderness with her and it may just prove to be her doom.

Utilizing Miller’s comedic strengths and puppetry skills, One-Armed Rabbit is ultimately an energetic romp into survivalist horror and, nicely, displays the virtues of a performer taking matters into her own hands and creating a fine vehicle for herself.

Meanwhile, animal activists everywhere are sure to approve of the film’s fun twist, as well.

“What do I wear?”

“Can I bring my pet llama?”

“What if my brain fries (like a mad scientist) and I just don’t understand what’s going on?”

Yes, theater, in general, can be scary for some. Nicely, the mad minds behind The Chicago Horror Theatre Festival are bringing you a bevy of stage shows that are actually supposed to terrify you, once you get in the door…not beforehand!

Offerings like Centralia: A Bloody Rock Musical, The Haunted Life (about a boy band of paranormal investigators) and Musical Horror Story Exorcism (featuring the talents of my favorite Midwest theatre diva, Caitlin Jackson) prove that there will probably be plenty to tickle your funny bone here, as well.

Running, both, Halloween weekend and the weekend afterwards at Stage 773 in Chicago, more information can be gathered at: https://www.facebook.com/ChicagoHorrorTheatreFest.

Fangs Vs. Spurs

Knock the dust out of your throat and slap the shit off those shoes! Indie horror darling Colleen Elizabeth Miller has recently wrapped up her role of Calamity Jane in the upcoming horror comedy Fangs Vs. Spurs.

Of course, Miller, who has starred in such spoof ridden features as Paranormal Calamity, is used to combining frights with laughs and this one, featuring low budget terror legend Joe Estevez, definitely sounds like a lot of fun.

Published August 12, 2015 by biggayhorrorfan

Horror lovers come from all backgrounds – which makes us a community of amazing diversity…and, often, provides lots of fun!

Musical theater performer Matthew Daniel Gordon recently added to this joyful mayhem by shooting a video that details his Top 4 Overrated Horror Films.

Much like Adam Rockoff’s recent book The Horror of It All, Gordon has some pretty dissenting opinions here – and whether you’re like me and agree with him on some of his picks (The Conjuring) and disagree on others (Jaws), you definitely should have a good time with the personable Gordon’s work, below.
