Hopelessly Devoted to: Lynn Anderson

Published January 8, 2024 by biggayhorrorfan

Ten years before Crystal Gayle was nearly killed by Another World‘s Sin Stalker, another country music legend perfected her own version of the final girl dance on an 1977 episode of celebrated detective show Starsky and Hutch. That offering’s terrified canary was multi hit making Lynn Anderson, in her one major acting role. But lest one discount the macabre charms of this vibrant blonde entertainer, Anderson’s connections to the genre are multi-fold. Her songs have been utilized in such fin-tastic genre projects as Jaws, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged and (the less amphibian) Zodiac. (If those aren’t scary enough for you, Anderson’s other major television credit that year was an appearance on the notoriously belittled The Brady Bunch Variety Show.)

Here, the Rose Garden singer is Sue Ann Grainger, an on-the-rise Honky-Tonk chanteuse. Luckily for Sue Ann, series regular Hutch (David Soul) is a big fan. As the creepy calls she’s been receiving for months turn deadly, the sun tossed officer and his partner Starsky immediately get in line to help save the day. In between confidently performing songs from Wrap Your Love All Around Your Man, her current LP, Anderson does an admirable job of acting out her character’s path from casually confident to completely frightened. With that latter emotion in full display, the best sequence occurs when Sue Ann’s tormentor (a raspy, shifty eyed Joshua Bryant) traps her in a recording studio, taunting her maniacally from the booth. Veteran television director George McCowan, who also helmed Frogs (with Ray Milland & Joan Van Ark) and the television terror Murder on Flight 502, does a skilled job with this scenario, using reflective surfaces and layered angles to cinematically capture his heroine’s traumatized actions.

Ultimately, like many a Laurie Strode wannabe, Sue Ann decides to take her fate into her own hands, confronting her attacker in an abandoned warehouse. Thankfully, with the help of the series’ titular duo, she lives to produce another backwoods love ballad or two. Anderson herself continued with her musical career throughout the decades, even earning a Grammy nomination in 2005 for a Bluegrass effort, before her untimely death of a heart attack in 2015. (Girl Group sound enthusiasts, meanwhile, are encouraged to check out her late ’60s recordings on Chart Records – an era that many vinyl connoisseurs determine to be her best.)

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Stacy Lattisaw

A mother’s quest for vengeance strikes at the heart of the much ridiculed Jaws: The Revenge. I, for one, have always taken this goofy showcase for the determined talents of Lorraine Gary as a fun, feminist uprising and Stacy Lattisaw’s song Nail it to the Wall, featured on the film’s soundtrack, definitely reflects the power of a woman at her fullest strength.

Lattisaw, who enjoyed a number of bouncy, beloved hits throughout the ‘80s, is still performing in a spiritualistic capacity and can be visited at www.stacylattisaw.org.

Horror lovers come from all backgrounds – which makes us a community of amazing diversity…and, often, provides lots of fun!

Musical theater performer Matthew Daniel Gordon recently added to this joyful mayhem by shooting a video that details his Top 4 Overrated Horror Films.

Much like Adam Rockoff’s recent book The Horror of It All, Gordon has some pretty dissenting opinions here – and whether you’re like me and agree with him on some of his picks (The Conjuring) and disagree on others (Jaws), you definitely should have a good time with the personable Gordon’s work, below.

Night Gallery Vamps: Lorraine Gary

Best known for her powerful yet down-to-earth portrayal of Ellen Brody in the Jaws film series, the versatile Loraine Gary brought a much more sinisterly haughty elegance to her appearance as Barbara Morgan in the 1973 3rd season Night Gallery episode entitled She’ll Be Company For You.

Luxuriating like a film noir femme fatale in turbans and designer dresses, Gary alternatively flirts with and seemingly condemns the show’s main focus, businessman Harry Audon, played with a slowly evaporating confidence by costar Leonard Nimoy. As the best friend of Audon’s recently deceased wife, Gary’s Morgan definitely wants to rip him apart (in a variety of ways), but she leaves such juicy details to her emotional doppelganger, a supposedly harmless cat.lorraine 2

Departing for a trip, Barbara gifts Audon with said pet. But his mild annoyance with his new responsibility soon turns into terror as the present apparently morphs into a viciously clawed supernatural entity. Ultimately, the viewers are never quite sure what the creature really is. But, one thing is for certain, Gary dominates this piece with an ice cold vigor and sensual sharpness.

Defending Jaws 4: The Revenge!

Published July 19, 2014 by biggayhorrorfan

Frequently, I have been referred to as all wet! While this may certainly be true in some cases, it does not apply when considering the fact that I believe the widely reviled Jaws 4: The Revenge is actually a pretty fun, vaguely feminist romp.

Recently, the distinguished gents of Astro Radio Z (including jocular host Derrick Carey) took a moment to examine their favorite films (including such titles as Firewalker, Staying Alive and Megaforce) that, currently, have a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

You can hear all about them and discover why I think Jaws 4: The Revenge is a perfect 50% at the link, below:
