Even mainstream horror has begun to acknowledge the LGBTQIA experience with gay characters populating the universes of Happy Death Day, Truth or Dare and Unfriended: Dark Web. It seems that now would be the perfect time to have a queer band dominate the soundtrack of one such offering.

With their emotional atmospherics and dramatic focus, Australian based Cub Sport, led by the dynamic Tim Nelson and his husband Sam Netterfield, would be the perfect choice to decorate some eerie landscape. Their work has even appeared in an episode of the television version of Scream and their second album was entitled Bats. Perfect, no?!?

One of Broadway’s true treasures, Jane Summerhays also brought her vital energy to Let the Games Begin, a third season episode of the George Romero created anthology series Tales From The Darkside.

Of course, Summerhays frequently gave veteran theater goers the chills. Who can forget her amazing work with Ann Miller in Sugar Babies and Eartha Kitt in The Wild Party? No one, that’s who!!!

Nicely, the footage below shows her in her prime from the original production of A Chorus Line.

Providing the ‘40s singing voice for everyone from MGM’s Vera Ellen to the stunning Rita Haworth, the versatile Anita Ellis earned her terror pedigree by having her vocals included in the 1964 horror cheese fest The Flesh Eaters. The sister of Larry Kert, the gay actor-singer who found acclaim in the original stage production of West Side Story, Ellis eventually courted success as a jazz singer in her latter day career – even though a particularly vicious form of stage fright often robbed her of her voice.

Still, her talent and skill will forever reverberate in numbers such as this.

Who Killed the Homecoming Queen?

One of my fondest memories of high school – yes, I do have one or two! – was when Kristin, my very blonde and pretty senior prom date, wore the same dress as the very nasty, slightly dog faced class president. I wasn’t very popular (and that moment may have made me even more of a pariah to some) but Kristin definitely won the “Who Wore It Better” poll that night.

The amazing Count the Clock Productions show another, more vicious way to teen victory with the Giallo shaded music video, Who Killed the Homecoming Queen? here. As always, their visual style radiates with LGBTQIA friendly potency and Euro-tinged delight.

Roles in Oklahoma, Carousel and The Music Man pegged the exquisite Shirley Jones as one of America’s true sweethearts. Glossy production numbers on variety specials, like the one below, only enhanced that image.

But every performer has a dual nature. Jones, who won an Academy Award for playing a lady of the evening in Elmer Gantry, has been nicely showing hers in such latter day horror productions as Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13^th and Zombie Night. If that isn’t proof of her full bounty of talent then I don’t know what is!

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Ida Lupino

Fierce and independent, Ida Lupino was the only female director working in Hollywood for many years. She was just as memorable in front of the camera, establishing herself as a prime example of the tough hearted film noir broad.

As was typical of many women in that genre, she played nightclub singers in both The Man I Love, the inspiration for Martin Scorsese’s New York, New York, and the atmosphere soaked Roadhouse, which had absolutely nothing to do with the Patrick Swayze cheese-fest of later years. Although dubbed in the former, she was able to display her own smoky, mood soaked voice in the latter.

Not expectedly in her fading years, Lupino found herself battling off gigantic feathered foes in Food of the Gods and Ernest Borgnine’s horned cult leader in The Devil’s Rain. Her last role was of a magnificent Norma Desmond take-off in an early episode of Charlie’s Angels, a fitting finale for one of the grand queens of the cinema.

Absolutely Not’s Glitch

There are gods and goddesses of rock that are known, worldwide. Others carry a local beat. Case in point: Donnie Moore, the gay ringleader of punk pop auteurs Absolutely Not, and Lindsey Charles, the dynamic force behind art rock provocateurs The Cell Phones, are Midwest sensations that deserve to conquer the universe as a whole.

Nicely, both of these amazing talents have a love for horror. Moore’s concept for Glitch, AN’s latest single, features a Trump masked serial killer and Charles as an industrious black final girl, something the entertainment world truly needs more of. By that I mean, of course, women of color kicking ass and not obnoxious sociopaths bringing us evermore teetering to the point of disaster!

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Nina Mae McKinney

Best known to old school horror and jungle movie fans for playing the revenge fueled Isabelle in 1939’s The Devil’s Daughter, the glorious Nina Mae McKinney was originally supposed to be MGM’s first black female superstar. Despite a glorious debut in King Vidor’s Hallelujah, the prejudice of the time cancelled out McKinney’s obvious appeal. The five year contract with Hollywood’s glossiest studio only led to a few loan out roles and an opportunity to provide the singing voice for Jean Harlow in the musical melodrama Reckless. Thankfully, McKinney’s contribution to that picture is not lost to time.

McKinney, who died of a heart attack at the age of 54 in 1967, has been, thankfully, regaled by cinematic historians like Donald Bogle. But one still wishes that her potential could have truly been met. A role playing Harlow’s rival, instead of one behind the scenes, would have truly been a breathtaking addition to her legacy.

Supernaturally gorgeous and full of talent, Carole Davis has collaborated with such esteemed musicians as Prince and Nile Rogers. In fact, her work with Rogers culminated in a fun album, Heart of Gold, and a single that was a staple at gay clubs and hip bars across the continents.

Of course, horror fans know this actress-author-musician best as the doomed Jai in James Cameron’s toothy Piranha II: The Spawning. But she also counts the moody apocalyptic drama The Rapture and the Kane Hodder monster fest Project: Metalbeast among her many credits. For those who love the world of terror, that indeed makes us count the divine Ms. Davis as one of those who possess serious money!
